DURING SHAKE DOWN TRIALS, I WAS ON THE FAN TAIL WHEN WE HAD TO DROP THE ANCHOR AND RISE IT IN A SET TIME.
THATS WHEN WE LOST THE ANCHOR,CHAIN, STEAM WINCH,STEAM LINE ETC,WE FAILED,THEY SCRAPED THE HOOPER AND TOOK THE USS KLONDIKLE AR22 OUT OF MOTHBALLS
I WAS ASSIGNED TO THE KLONDIKE TO GET POWER,WATER UP AND GOING SO THEY COULD GET THE BOILERS GOING

Yeah the Hooper was a 'fast' ship, if you rigged the movie screen for a sail and pointed it down hill. The captain challenged an air craft carrier to a race to Pearl Harbor and lost.
Sasebo seemed like our home port.

Thought you might like to see how the model of ARG-17, U.S.S. Hooper Island is progressing. It is not complete, nor is it ever likely to be. I Am still gathering information and gleaning details from fuzzy photo's and an ever-declining memory and will update from time to time as details are confirmed. The model is intended to depict the ship as she appeared in 1954-55.

Zane Moot was our Chief.
We cruised to Eniwetok in the Marshal Islands in 1958, On Operation Hard Tack. In 1959 Hooper Island received orders to Decommission and the Crew was to transfer to USS Klondike to be recommissioned. I do have a picture of the Hoop but it will be some months before I can get to them.

Comments: I served aboard the Navasota during the Viet nam conflict, however we were involved in a KOREAN adventure during that time. Of course no one knew what was going on, but at first we were in the Tonkin gulf, and days later we noticed the weather was getting cooler, and finaly cold...Then one day in the P.O.D.
