Comments: some recalled shipates abate,pausch and cpo jack boyd all sonarman. picket duty in sea state 5 was hellacious and asw duty w/nautilis was most educational as nautilis spec's were top secret at the time.i was transferred to uss arcadia ad23 WAS replaced by mike grant so3 about mid 1956. best wishes to all including skipper cdr john delargy probably dec'd by now

I was stationed on the Harveson DER 316 from Nov 1955
until we transferred her to the mothball fleet in Sacromento, Ca on 30 June 1960. She did a lot of squeaking and groaning, but she a good ship
I was assigned to the OI Division and worked in CIC as did many others in that crew. Radar picket was a very boring and monotonous running atound in circles for 24 0r 25 days. We all looked forward to the departure from the assigned watch station, and bringing the engines on line to make a dash to our home port.. .MEMORIES>>

SUNRISE, Fla. Douglas Hempstead, 81, of Sunrise, formerly of Westerlo, died October 29, 2003. Born in Ravena and raised in Westerlo, N.Y., Doug was a 1939 graduate of Berne-Knox-Westerlo High School. He attended Hope College in Mich. before serving in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He served in both the European and Pacific theaters on the destroyer escort USS Harveson. After retiring from Hannay Hose Reels in 1974, Doug and his family moved to Fla. where he resided in Lake Worth, Lake Placid and Sunrise. He is survived by his wife Martha; children, Thomas D. Hempstead and Jeanne A. Hempstead of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. and Garry R. Hempstead of San Diego, Calif.; granddaughter, Jessica M. Hempstead of Richmond, Va.; and brother, Robert G. Hempstead of Latham, NY.

Comments: I was assigned to the Harveson in March 1957 in Newport R.I. and after 15 barrier patrol missions sailed with her to San Francisco for decommisioning. I was discharged in May 1960, and have lost touch with all my shipmates. I'd be interested in hearing from any of you. I've marked the reunion on my calandar and hope to be there.

Comments: I have been knowing that this ship was named after my cousin but I had the wrong name which was his mothers name, Mrs. T.L. Herlong. I was looking for information why was the ship named after Harveson? I now know he was killed on the USS Utah at Pearl Harbor. He was in the first group there, that was killed.
