Comments: My name is Richard Martinez but I was called Marty. I came aboard in early 1964 and left the ship in Dec.1965. I was assigned to ship service department which I shared duties in operating the Ship Store and Laundryroom. I am looking for help with this time period, to continue with my VA claim! If anyone can supply me with any information like photo's of Vietnam close to the shore line or at the dock. I remembered going up a wide river and turning around we were at general quarters, Also rescued Capt.Leland D.Holcomb who had ejected from his F100 Super Sabre fighter plane. Also inspecting junks at all hours of the night. Why I'm asking for help is that my DD214 shows that I was never in Vietnam or received any military awards which is false. I also remembered Captain Wright or the XO went on shore so if we let them off we were close to shore or docked I don't remember which. Any information anyone can provide would be a great help. Thanks Again

Comments: I happened upon this website and saw a few names I remember from when I was stationed on the USS Vance. The names I remember are Birthnes
J. Rouchea RM2 “ROACH”, James Paul Sweeney, John Lundy, Joseph Betters, Jan Burkholdr “Burk” RM3. I was not a Radioman however. My designation was John Campbell EN2. I came aboard (If I remember right) in late 1965 and worked “A” Gang until 1967, and after that; it was all about the civilian life. Yo Ho Ho and a bottle of “I’M out of here.” If any of the old Vance Crew remembers me, send me an e-mail. If you don’t remember me, send me an e-mail anyway; I would like to say hi to all of my old shipmates.
