All I know is that he was in the navy and I believe a Frogman and a underwater demolition, my grandmother has no idea and keeps not wanting to show me his paperwork when I come home. I've been in the Navy now for 11 years myself and have always admired that he was in. His name was Garrett Baird. His best friend was my uncle Huck, but he passed a while ago and doesn't like to talk about any of it either. Please if anyone has any information on him, contact me. I think he might have fought during the Korean War, but I'm not sure. He was stationed in Hawaii though.

Unfortunately, he passed away suddenly from a massive heart attack in 1998 at the age of 65. But I have lots of photos I am willing to share. Really awesome pictures! According to my mom, one of the pictures made the cover of a magazine. She thinks it was either Life Magazine or Time Magazine. It is a photo of them sitting atop an iceberg. I also have photos of 'Grandpa Jones' doing a show for the service members during the war, as well as many other, really cool photos.

The day before my grandmother passed away four years ago sitting in the hospice lobby I decided I would follow in his footsteps and start preparing myself for BUD/s. Three eye surgeries later I have perfect vision and I'm in the process of getting my contract. What I wouldn't give to sit down with my grandfather to hear some of his stories and take in some advice... He was a proud SEAL. He would talk about his travels and what BUD/s was like but not often. I randomly found this page and I'm hoping it can reach to someone that is around and from Team - 1. I am simply just looking to make a phone call and have some good conversation and hopfully hear some stories about my grandpa from the good old days. Thank you for reading this and for your time.

He was a 30 year U.S. Navy veteran, Mustang Officer, a USN deep-sea diver, a WW-II, Korea, Vietnam veteran. In WW-II, he was in the destroyer USS Duncan-DD-485, and was wounded when it was sunk by the Japanese at Guadalcanal (12, Oct. 1942). He was a BMC, under Captain Harry H. He refused, however, to be treated like a second class citizen; especially after his service to the United States of America. At this point in my life, I believe his service was under recognized. When he had a few drinks he talked to his sons about his experience and training. My mother, aunt, and grandmother said he never talked about his experiences. He used to have his medals such as his purple heart. He received the purple heart because his platoon ( i think its called) blew up and he lost most of his friends and his knee had a metal sheet in it and he had one testical removed. He told me before he died that he had lied about his age because he was only 17 when he went in. I was wondering if you could please tell me where I might find information on him or photos, since they had taken photos? Comments: I am trying to find out if any civilian Tech Reps received UDT or similar training so that they could get to and from installations where their electronic services were needed. A Korean vet indicated that my Dad, a techrep, worked with UDT Teams 5 and 3 in the Korean Theater 1950-51. Given that some of the equipment he serviced at that time was stuff associated with a unit in Tactical Air Control functions this rumor is plausible. Also a UDT frogman was a friend of the family and saw us off at the pier when Dad retired from DOD contract work in my childhood. This also hints at some association with frogmen in his technician career too. Another thought was that his association with frogs dates as far back as his Signal Corps service in WWII. In Korea Dad was part of a large group of Philco Techreps servicing all types of equipment for all the military branches over there throughout the Korean conflict that was managed by Mr. Raymond Dick according to Philco publications dating to the time.

He
served in South Pacific, did some training at Ft. Pierce, earned a
bronze star (which a family member has now lost), had a chief
named Devereaux, and good friend Joe from Chicago maybe he
served with (trying to get grandma to remember the last name).
He shared a bit with me, and probably more with me than some
others. Some funny...drinking, cussing, train trips, the ladies, and
more (he wanted me to enjoy all my moments in...drink, go out
with
some fellas, get tattoed, and more) and he wanted me prepared in
case, and shared stories of bodies and horror and would tear up
each time. And how after one incident, all had to go to pysch and
many did not deploy again because of how bad that one was.
If you know about my hero, please contact me. My dad was born
in
47 so grandpa was out by then, living in NM. He was from TX
