Comments: The entry below was made on the Korean War Project of
Maine's wall by my now deceased wife, and was her last
attempt to gain the missing information on the
circumstances of her brothers arrival in Korea.
If you are reading this then you care, and this
information won't bring Pearl's brother back, but it
will give those who wish his memories to live on, the
much needed/sought answers.
As a Navy Corpsman, he was attached to the Marines for
combat missions in Korea. That is fact, also fact is
his arrival, and subsequent death, in Korea.
Our questions are in how he got there, and the mode
most frequently used was via ship. If he and his
Marines arrived via ship, then that ship should be
known by those who were on board, and certainly the War
Department, the US Navy, or the Marine Corp, should
have those records.
Nobody has been able to provide any of those simple
answers for Pearl's family since his death, so the
biggest question now is - !!! WHY !!! ??
PEARL's NOTE: Submission 19247 By PEARL COLFORD
I was 8 years old when Merlon got killed in Korea. Just
before Merlon's death, his unit sent our Dad a card
with money in it as I had just lost my leg in a farm
accident and a few months before that our baby sister
had died in a car/train accident. I remember our father
showed that card to everyone. Merlon had 6 brothers and
one sister left as he lost a sister and a brother.
There is only 2 of us left and we often talk of Merlon
as he was the brother that held the family together.
Our mother passed away in 1944 and the older boys
helped our father raise us younger children. Merlon was
left to do it when his 2 older brothers joined the
service. Then Merlon felt that he had to go and help
and that is when the family was seperated. We were
boarded out to family members and private homes. But
the memories of Merlon are all loving memories. He
always cared for someone. He has always been sadly
missed by his entire family. The pain is still there as
it was the day they laid him to rest. There are not
words that can express the love that I have for him. I
have his Purple Heart and I wear it proudly on Memorial
Day.
My wife will never know those answers, but her
relatives, and I are still here. That information is
needed by all of us, so won't you all give us a hand?
Thank you,
Larry

my wife.
As a Navy Medic, and as others, he was called DOC.
We have never known what ship he, and his Marines,
were attached to.
His records must reflect that information, but all
past attempts to gain access to them have failed.
Pearl passed away on November 10, 2010, and she
wanted me to get that, and any other information on
his Military stay, as possible.
This is sort of a last resort, and hopefully with
your help, we can answer those questions.
Best of luck, and God Speed to you all!
