Comments: I was an enlisted engineer aboard the LST-735 in Korea when the whirly-birds picked up downed pilots in the water near Wonson and sometimes from hilltops in North Korea. After a long wait in some pretty cold waters, those fly boys looked more dead than alive, but they had frozen smiles on their faces when they stepped out on the deck. Note: LST-799 and LST-735 swapped duty during that time.

Comments: What I want to know does any one have any information on Chief Duane Thorne. He was flying helicopters off the the Rochester during the Korean war,and was captured. Made POW and released at the end of the war. Does any one have info. on this incident?I heard there was a story in Life magazine about it? Earl Lanning
Update from Doug Froling:
With some big help from the curator at the Naval Helicopter Historical Society we located Duane Thorin ( his name was misspelled) in Chambers, Neb... Earl Lanning contacted him by phone, and is completely over-joyed - so we can check off another lost sailor found. By the way Thorin was a POW after his 'chopper crashed in Feb. 1952 and was released in Aug. 1953. He is the author of a book - "A Ride to Panmunjom" (1956)..

Comments: John Thorton(USN POW). Probably one of the most historical POW's to ever go under Communist Torture and direct Stateside/Phone harresment of family members. John was a helocopter pilot who was one of the first captured by the North Koreans. Yet I can find no reference to him, so far.
