Comments: I was stationed with HU-1 at Ream Field in 1952 and 1953 until hostilities ended and I received a 2 month early discharge. I toured on 4 carriers , U.S.S. Yorktown, Sicily, Pt. Cruz and Bairoka. I was mechanic and flew as crewman on Sikorsky HO3S. I still Remember accident on Sicily when air officer turned carrier into wind before helicopter was launched and blades coned flipping helicopter over cutting one of our crew in half and cutting arm off another. I enjoyed flying with some of the best and craziest pilots in the navy, but incidences like this plus combat casualties made you aware of the seriousness of the job you were performing. When squadron received new Piasecki tandem rotor helicopters I was assigned plane captain for UP-14. I and my wife lived in trailer navy housing located at end of base. If any of my old Squadron members read this let me hear from you.

I am also interested in finding out which HUP2 we lost off Hawaii when it was waved off of landing and hit the Vertical antenna's, then crashed off the starboard side of the carrier. Donald Brown was lost in the accident and LT. Webb, the pilot, was rescued after having obtained a broken wrist in the crash. I would like to be contacted by my fellow crewmen, especially John Leahy.

Comments: ADCS-Arlene Keith Dick Babbitt,USN,(WW-II, Korea, Vietnam),from
Avon, Il, joined the US Navy in WW-II, married in 1948,fathered
3 daughters, and one son. He was an enlisted (AP) pilot with
HU-1. Unit#14, attached to the Australian aircraft carrier
H.M.A.S. Sydney. Chief Babbitt received word on 26,Oct.1951,
SBLT. Neil MacMillan, his observer CPO-Phillip Hancox, and their
downed RAN, Firey Fire Fly aircraft from RN Squadron 817, 21st.
(CAG) commanded by Commander Mike Fell,RN, were in a frozen rice
paddy, 50 miles behind enemy lines, holding attacking enemy
troops at bay with their Owen sub-machine guns, then other Sea
Furies, and RAAF Meteor jets from RAAF-77 Squadron, put up a
protective barrage around the downed men. A rescue helicopter was
sent from Kimpo airbase, but was forced to turn back. Chief
Babbitt's air crewman, AD3-Callis C. Gooding, was given a hurried
lesson in the use of the Australian Owen sub-machine gun, and
they turned over their UP-28 helicopter, they called Uncle
Peter, at 16:30, and began a 176km flight, against fading light.
Dick Babbitt kicked his helicopter up to 120kph, and set a speed
record for his aircraft's model. In the dusk, Chief Babbitt was
guided to the downed airmen's position in a rice paddy ditch, by
tracers of incoming enemy machine gun fire. When they landed,
Callis Gooding jumped out of the helicopter, and shot down two
enemy troops with his Owen sub-machine gun. He got the grounded
men in the chopper, and as they lifted off, Sea Furie aircraft
laid down a shielding barrage, and Uncle Peter made it safely to
Kimpo airfield. They flew back to the Sydney the next day.
Babbitt, and Gooding,at age 30, both were awarded Navy Cross
Medals. Chief Babbitt was also awarded The Commonwealth
Distinguished Service Medal, the only UN serviceman in Korea to
receive the awards of two nations, for the same action. In 1956,
AD3-Gooding was awarded The Navy and Marine Corps Medal, for
another helicopter rescue. All in a days work, for HU-1 crews.
ADCS-Arlene K. Babbitt, d/o/b/-Feb.28,1921, d/o/d/-Nov.11,2006,
is buried at: Section-6A, Site-67, in Northern Nevada Veteran's

from electronics school at Memphis (Millington) TN I was trained to
interpret sonar echo responses in the Pacific Ocean off the Southern
California coast. We would let the sonar (ball) down about 100 feet from
the bottom of the helicopter and view 360 degrees. Thankfully, all we ever
found were whales which would surface to see what the disturbance was. I
noticed the other commenters used HU-1 thru HU-4, but as I remember
our unit was known as HX-2. Does anybody know why? Also, didn't we
have the Marines on this base to fly the TBM's and drop bombs on any
subs we could find? My nephew says our helicopters were Hueys. Does
anyone know what kind of copters we were flying in?

Comments: I was on the Phil Sea with VC 35 in 52-53. Seems like one of the rescue helicoptors had a sign THE LAST CHANCE TAXI Is this true or is my old memory that bad?

Comments: I would ask that the keeper of this forum remove the referenced message in its entirety, or at least, excise the first paragraph of it.
Following the receipt of several eamils from the readers of the referenced message and the search through my personal papers, I can but offer an apology for my comment. It was MY own 72 year old memory at fault, not theirs, and if there were any indication of slighting of the memories of or the actions of either Ltjg Koelsch or Duane Thorin, I can but state that it was not intended.
Too many pilots and crews served bravely and with little fanfare in that war to have me demean their efforts and courage.

Comments: Someone has a poor memory on Chief Thorin. He was flying as crewman (not pilot) on an HO3S-1 Sikorsky helicopter, with pilot LT(jg) Koelsch, and I think they were flying off the Princeton (CV-37) or had just been replaced off that carrier. I think the assistant crew chief to Chief Thorin was one John Bernard Bennett. My recollection of the affair was that a second chopper tried several times to retrieve both chopper crew and downed pilot, but the ground fire was so heavy as to make it impossible.
I will share photos of the 1951 crew from the Phil Sea, the (52)Iowa, and the (53)Manchester, on request. Names were Bernard Samuels, Ltjg; Raymond Karls, ADC(AP); AD1s George Moore and George Morrell, PO3 (ET) James Harkins; AMM3 Charles Baker; ADANs Glen Papasan and James Deatherage. From the Iowa, pilots David Lumsden and Lt. Ben Leathers; AD1 Lonnie Walters, W. Myers, Tyburski. From the Toledo-Manchester, Ens. Paul Johnson; Lt. Sullivan; ET3 Turner.
And, for all the 'ready room round tablers" from Miramar and Ream, I told you so--that the chopper could do a loop and survive!!"

Comments: I am interested in other pilots and other Navy personnel who served aboard the Kearsarge during the Korean conflict. I flew the HO3S from that carrier in 1952-53 with an Ensign Henry, I believe. I'd be happy to hear from anyone who served on that illustrious ship at that time.

Comments: I might be mistaken, but I think Lt. Duane Thorin, USN, who passed away recently, was the basis for the Mike Forney character in James Michener's novel The Bridges At Toko-Ri. In the movie version, Forney was played by Mickey Rooney.
Please advise me on the accuracy of this info. (I found much of it on the internet--I happen to be interested in military history and the works of James Michener.)
