Comments: Richard John Eaton, Brigadier General (US Army Retired) passed away on Saturday May 15th, 2010. Dick was 86 years old and resided in Nashville, TN.

Born to Leland E. Eaton and Caroline Simonson Eaton in Chicago, IL April 3rd of 1924, Dick attended school in Elmhurst, IL including Elmhurst College. Enlisting in the army reserves in 1942, Dick had a distinguished military career including combat service as a paratrooper in Europe during WWII with the 517th Parachute Infantry Combat Team, in Korea with the 3rd Ranger Company (Airborne), and in Vietnam as a command officer with the 1st Infantry Division. Dick retired from the army in 1976 as a Brigadier General with many commendations and honors including:

Silver Star (with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters),
Legion of Merit,
Distinguished Flying Cross (with Oak Leaf Cluster),
Soldiers Medal,
Bronze Star Medal with V Device (with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters),
Meritorious Service Medal,
Air Medal (5 Awards),
Joint Service Commendation Medal (with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters),
Army Commendation Medal (with Oak Leaf Cluster),
Purple Heart (with 5 Oak Leaf Clusters),
Good Conduct Medal,
Combat Infantryman Badge (3rd Award),
Master Parachutist Badge,
Vietnamese Honor Medal 1st Class,
Thailand Parachute Badge,
Thailand Ranger Badge, and
Induction into the Ranger Hall of Fame.

His 33 years of service included tours of duty in Pakistan, Thailand, Germany, and with the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon. He held a BS from Northwestern University, a Master of Science in Geography from the University of Illinois, Urbana, and was a graduate of the National War College.

Dick married Patricia Baldwin of Gainesville, GA in September of 1945 and together they raised 4 children during their world travels. Dick took advantage living in each country to teach his children respect for different cultures, and religions, and about the opportunities available. His son, Michael trekked in Northern Pakistan and the Himalayas with him at the age of 8 years, and again in Northern Thailand when he was 15 years old; all his children went to international schools around the world and learned to be curious, explore and enjoy adventure. Dick and the family skied in Europe, and his kids and grandson still enjoy the sport as a family activity. Dick enjoyed bluegrass, jazz, and opera. He and his wife Pat shared a love of musicals and danced like Fred and Ginger. His beloved wife, Pat, passed away in October of 1999.

When Dick retired from the army, he joined the staff at The Pennsylvania State University in the Strategic Studies Department and continued academic studies while sharing his knowledge and experience with advanced studies students. In 1990, Dick and Pat moved back to her native Gainesville, GA where they served in volunteer organizations and enjoyed travel, relatives and friends.

Dick is survived by his second wife Margaret whom he married in 2001, his children Michael, Angela, Pamela, and Timothy (wife, Phyllis), and grandchildren Kailey and Dillon.

Interment with Military Honors took place at the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego, California June 21st, 2010. A memorial service in Gainesville, Georgia was held for family and friends on July 7th, 2010.

Thank you Dad for your inspiration, courage, and honor.

Keywords: My dad died almost 30 years ago. I remember him telling about his life in the Korean War. I would like to hear from anyone who served with my dad during those hellish years. He was stationed at Ft. Benning, Ga and trained as a ranger. He was in the 3rd Infantry Division; 3rd Ranger Infantry Company. He was injured 1/31/51. The injury was to his right eye resulting in him having a steel plate in his head. The stories he told me of the cold, the lack of food and warm clothes, hand to hand combat, and many other "hard to imagine" experiences have been on my mind so much lately. I do not know why I have become so interested in finding information about him, but I feel like I MUST know from people who served with him. I have searched on the net and found a picture of him as well as the list of casualties with his name on it. I just cannot find info about the day to day experiences of his company.

Comments: Dad was inducted into the Ranger Hall of Fame in Aug 1998. My mother, Patricia, passed away in 1999 and Dad and his second wife, Margaret, recently moved to a retirement community in Hermitage, TN. I attended a Ranger reunion with him several years ago and I really enjoyed meeting his mates. I'm sure Dad would love to hear from those of you who served with him or knew him back then or perhaps more recently. You may contact me directly and I will provide you with his new address and phone number.

Comments: Please help me find a chaplain who served in the Pubwon-ni area. I have a (1964?)photo of him with two orphans from Happiness Orphanage, 20 orphans driven weekly to chapel by orphanage father via bus. One child in the picture is Goo Sooni, an Amerasian, about 11 yrs. Her mother: Jung Song Ja, "Mickey" to GIs, from Pubwon-ni, near MIckey Mouse Corner.
Just before chaplain returned to US, he took Sooni to Elvis movie, "Viva Las Vegas" and to base cafeteria for hamburg. The chaplain left "a lot of money" with Sooni's mother to "take care of Sooni".
Sooni was rescued by the author, Pearl S. Buck, brought to the states, is now married, a mother of two grown sons, middle school math teacher and a strong supporter of the Pearl S. Buck efforts to care for Amerasian children around the world.
I am writing Sooni's memoir. She would like very much to thank the chaplain for his kindness. My husband and I are trying to find the gentleman for her.
If anyone has any inkling as to the identification of this chaplain, any source for our search, or whatever, we do not have his name and would appreciate very much any help someone might be able to give. Bless you. Carol Wedeven
If you're interested, we will send digitized photo.
