VQ 1 TE 4 AIRCRAFT HISTORY |
| LARRY ALLEY wrote on January 22, 2011 City and State: Unit: VW 1 Service or Relationship: NAVY VETERAN Comments: The various WV2 aircraft that ended up on the VQ 1 side of the Runway at NAS Agana Guam, came from VW 1 decommissioned aircraft. TE 4 bird was a high time Typhoon, Logistics Tac air support bird. Her history is laid out in various USN historical sites, eventually ending up in Desert Storage at Phoenix, Arizona. My personal history was some 500 hours of Fleet support and Typhoon hunting in this bird. She survived a hard landing in the stormy rain, at NAS Agana Guam circa 1961. Techs, Radiomen, Air Controllers all should recognize this bird. end Keywords: VW 1 VR 21 |

ONE YEAR FLYING AIRCREW WITH VQ-1 DANANG |
| RUDOLPH JOJOLA wrote on December 20, 2010 City and State: FAIRBANKS AK Unit: VQ-1 FLEET SUPPORT DETACHMENT DANANG Service or Relationship: NAVY VETERAN Comments: I served in Danang, RVN from Nov 71 to Nov 72. During this period I divided my duties with working ground commcenter to being airborne. The highlights of my tour were: U.S.S. Higbee attack in Gulf of Tonkin and numerous rocket attacks. When I left Danang in Nov 1972, there were already discussions of relocating the squadron to Cubi Point AB, Philippines. I am curious to know what happened to the three female Vietnamese working at the "Spook mess"? There was a major concern about leaving them to fend for themselves in Vietnam. Some squadron members mentioned the possibility of marrying them and taking them out of Vietnam. Keywords: Flew P3 Orion and DC-121 Constellations for airborne comm duties in Vietnam. It was tough getting supplies for flight crews in Nam but relocation process worked well. The Air Force did not need it and the Marines did not have anything to borrow. Bob Hope show was Vietnam highlight with Rachquel Welch. Remember the Marine chow hall and the powdered eggs. Those guys can fight but they can not cook. Hill 327,Monkey mountain and the sights and smells. Good people at the Paraloft in squadron and NAS with Chief DeYoung and his pipe.Flight lines, line watch with a 12 gauge and 45, sand bags at china beach m-16 and 45,and bunkers at 0230 for fireworks. | CHUCK PROVOW wrote on August 1, 2010 City and State: CLEARFIELD UT Unit: VQ-1 Service or Relationship: NAVY VETERAN Comments: I spent most of my time in Da Nang from 70-72. I arrived to Atsugi Oct 70, by Dec I was sent "down south", for 6 weeks, that turned into several months. Was sent to Guam for 3 months and sent back to Dan Nang. I forget when, but it was budda's birthday and ARVIN went home leaving our perimiter open. A chief told us to go get weapons and be ready to fight. Fortunatly they attacked the A/F side. Towards the end they flew all of our planes and most of the people out, we were expecting a heavy attack. There was an officer, a chief and 13 of us left behind. They were gone for two days. That was a bit scary. I still have nightmares about the rocket/mortor attacks. We lost a few guys while I was with the "Q". I don't remember names but do see their faces. Well I have to go. | DONALD PAGELER wrote on May 20, 2001 City and State: WESTMINSTER CA Unit: Service or Relationship: NAVY VETERAN - KOREA Comments: I have suffered with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The first thing I had to deal with was survivors guilt. I left the Liberty for duty in Hawaii. Being a CT like my brothers on the EC121M, shot down by the North Koreans in April of 1969,I was sworn to secrecy. When I was debreifed after being attacked by the Israeli's, I was told to never talk about it. Twothirds of our crew were killed or wounded. I was one of the first to be aware of what happened to the Pueblo and the EC121M flight. It only put more nails in my emotional coffin. God bless those who keep the memories alive.
