NEED HELP PROVING SERVICE TO VA

ROBERT URICH wrote on March 28, 2014

City and State: MAYER AZ

Unit: VQ-1 ATSUGI JAPAN 1968-1970

Service or Relationship: NAVY VETERAN

Comments: I am having problem proving to VA that I was in-country in Vietnam on a detachment from Atsugi, Japan, from Squadron VQ1 from Oct 16-Dec 6, 1969. This service was completely left off of my DD214. The DD214 shows my service in Atsugi to Oct., 1969 and shows my service starting up again in Atsugi in December 1969 with no mention of what took place between those dates. I have letters to and from Vietnam but since no postage or postmark is needed for letters to or from Vietnam for servicemen, there is no proof on letters. Why doesn't VA recognize this? If anyone can help me, please send message to my wife's email address - susanurich@yahoo.com. This is time sensitive. We only have a short period of time to try to prove this. Knew Fred Carpenter, Tim, Randy Irizarry, Bill Shuey, Mike Banks, many others. HELP and THANKS - Robert Urich

Comments: I was stationed in Atsugi Japan with VQ-1 from 1968
to 1970. Soon after arrival in Japan, I was selected
to go to the Lockheed factory in Burbank, CA to
conduct acceptance inspections on PR-31 and PR-32
(first two EP-3B's in VQ-1). Assigned to Crew 32 upon
return to Japan with PR-32. Deployed numerous times
to Danang and also flew missions to sucker North
Korea out again after they shot PR-21 down. AS others
have stated, I am having trouble proving to VA that I
was actually on the ground in Danang. Anyone that
remembers me and can help me out, please contact me.
My time in VQ-1 was the best. The men in VQ-1 were
some of the most dedicated and professional I have
ever served with. I am proud to have been a member of

Comments: The various WV2 aircraft that ended up on the VQ 1 side of the Runway at NAS Agana Guam, came from VW 1 decommissioned aircraft.
TE 4 bird was a high time Typhoon, Logistics Tac air support bird. Her history is laid out in various USN historical sites, eventually ending up in Desert Storage at Phoenix, Arizona.
My personal history was some 500 hours of Fleet support and Typhoon hunting in this bird. She survived a hard landing in the stormy rain, at NAS Agana Guam circa 1961.
Techs, Radiomen, Air Controllers all should recognize this bird.

Comments: I served in Danang, RVN from Nov 71 to Nov 72. During this period I divided my duties with working ground commcenter to being airborne. The highlights of my tour were: U.S.S. Higbee attack in Gulf of Tonkin and numerous rocket attacks. When I left Danang in Nov 1972, there were already discussions of relocating the squadron to Cubi Point AB, Philippines. I am curious to know what happened to the three female Vietnamese working at the "Spook mess"? There was a major concern about leaving them to fend for themselves in Vietnam. Some squadron members mentioned the possibility of marrying them and taking them out of Vietnam.

It was tough getting supplies for flight crews in Nam but relocation process worked well. The Air Force did not need it and the Marines did not have anything to borrow. Bob Hope show was Vietnam highlight with Rachquel Welch. Remember the Marine chow hall and the powdered eggs. Those guys can fight but they can not cook. Hill 327,Monkey mountain and the sights and smells. Good people at the Paraloft in squadron and NAS with Chief DeYoung and his pipe.Flight lines, line watch with a 12 gauge and 45, sand bags at china beach m-16 and 45,and bunkers at 0230 for fireworks. Was sent to Guam for 3 months and sent back to Dan Nang. I forget when, but it was budda's birthday and ARVIN went home leaving our perimiter open. A chief told us to go get weapons and be ready to fight. Fortunatly they attacked the A/F side. Towards the end they flew all of our planes and most of the people out, we were expecting a heavy attack. There was an officer, a chief and 13 of us left behind. They were gone for two days. That was a bit scary. I still have nightmares about the rocket/mortor attacks. We lost a few guys while I was with the "Q". I don't remember names but do see their faces. Well I have to go. Key West was an Awsome duty station. after New Years Day 1981, I was headed to Guam. After being moved around from one over manned dept. to another I was given an opportunity to manage my own Dept. Amsu. I worked close with the AT's. I was later deployed to VQ2 stationed in the B.I.O.T. during the Lebanon and Grenada Conflicts.(The Forgotten Conflicts) after a West Pac inspection I was awarded with a invitation from the Regional Admiral at that time to go with him to Ulithi Atol for a graduation ceremony.
other times I was invited to go on a round robin tour, Atsugi Japan, Pussan S. Korea, and return to Guam. We spent 1 week in S. Korea...

Being a CT like my brothers on the EC121M, shot down by the North Koreans in April of 1969,I was sworn to secrecy. When I was debreifed after being attacked by the Israeli's, I was told to never talk about it. Twothirds of our crew were killed or wounded. I was one of the first to be aware of what happened to the Pueblo and the EC121M flight. It only put more nails in my emotional coffin. God bless those who keep the memories alive.
