EMBARKED TROOPS, 1950 |
| JEROME BONKOWSKI wrote on August 30, 2011 City and State: LOMBARD IL Unit: 2DBN, 7TH MARINES, 1ST MARDIV (FMF) Service or Relationship: MARINE VETERAN Comments: Boarded the Army's Sultan 12Dec50 at Hungnam for voyage to Pohang. Re-embarked on LSD-17 bound for Pusan. Major unit taken aboard was 7th Marine Regiment, retiring from Chosin Reservoir battle. I remember being in a 24-hour chow line that ran 360 degrees around the ship. We were dirty, tired, and hungry. The crew treated us like royalty. Go Navy. Keywords: General D.I. LOOKING FOR RADIOMEN/SHIPMATES |
| RICK HERNDON (GROSSHANS) wrote on January 19, 2009 City and State: MATHIS TX Unit: USS CATAMOUNT, LSD-17 Service or Relationship: NAVY VETERAN Comments: Served on Catamount Oct. 65 through Oct. 66. Came aboard as radio striker, left as RM3. I don't see any RM or hams in the group here. When I was there, even the XO was a ham + one EM. I'm K5FNI, as I was then. Joined Catamount in Subic, with back and forth to VN and many amphibious assaults. At one point we had 19 RMs on board! Back to San Diego in 66, where I left for Beach Jumper Unit One duty. I ran ham radio phone patches for guys to talk to their wives from west of Hawaii back to CONUS. I was the only one of 5 Texans on board that WASN'T offered the chance by a judge to join the Navy or go to jail! I actually volunteered for the Reserves. Keywords: Joe Bynum, Feeler, |

BELATED RESPONSE TO C. ANDERSON ENTRY NO. 29133 |
| LEROY (OLEO) OOLEY wrote on January 24, 2008 City and State: COLORADO SPRINGS CO Unit: US NAVAL RESREVES Service or Relationship: NAVY VETERAN Comments: This is in response to an inquirey dated 2002 by Mrs. Carole Anderson. While we stateside we did picket duty up and down the coast. AS I remember we went from Baha to about Northern Cal. and back. In Jan. of 55 we sailed up the coast putting in at Astora OR. and under the Golden Gate into San Fran. From there along the Alutian islands. we took on fuel at the Adak naval station. The Temp. was in the -30s Sailing out of adak we encountered a fierce storm, which tossed us around for about 36 hours I remember our chief saying "we have sailed at full speed for 24 hours and lost 10 knots" The storm caused us to rip open a fresh water tank thus restricting the use of fresh water to feeding the boilers. When we arived in Japan we went into the shipyards and the damage to the hull was welded closed and reinforced. From Yokuska we went to I don't remember where and took on a group of marines I am thinking about 200 men then along with several other ships sailed down the coast of China to an island (Naknek) I am not sure of the correct name. The marines went ashore in landing craft that were stored in our well deck. Trucks and tanks were delivered in an LST. The mission was to evacuate the island, which is what happened. The natives were assembled on the beach with whatever they could carry, sprayed with a delouesr chemical and loaded into the LST. The were delivered to Tiwan. While we took our marines and their equipment back to Japan. I don't remember the time sequence, but we went into Hong Cong before starting our return journey I know that we were there on the fourth of July. We took on fuel on Guam. Coming back we came straight accross close enough to one of the hawiian islands to see it but did not put in. Back in the states we resumed picket duty. Keywords: Oleo I served aboard the uss catamount in the starboard engine room from Aug.54 to Dec. 55 I was released Just before they sailed for the A bomb tests. |
