Re my previous post concerning Marine PFC Ruben Sanchez Adame,
C-1-1, of Alvin, Texas.

We've learned from official sources that he was sent to the rear for
more ammo by his squad leader at 2240 on 23Apr51, just as the Chinese
launched a major offensive of more than 500,000 troops into a UN front
along the Pukhan River (Hwachon Reservoir). PFC Adame did not make it
to the rear and was never seen again. He never appeared on any POW
lists.

Now, we're seeking contact with anyone who was in Charley Company, 1st
Bn., 1st Marine Regiment (1st Mar Div.) in April 1951. We realize
this is a long shot but the family is seeking a closure of some kind.

Re Ruben Adame: C/1/1

The KWP received a call from John Welch, Moss Point, MS late Jan, 97,
regarding Charlie Co. and Mr. Welch remembers Ruben as does Bill
Craven, same unit. They did not witness the incident but would be
glad to correspond.

John has written extensively about the Horseshoe Ridge fight April

Subject: INFORMATION SEARCH, CAN YOU HELP?

THE TIME FRAME FOR THE BATTLE WAS THE 23RD AND 24TH OF APRIL 1951. OUR
UNIT WAS ABLE CO. 1ST BN, 1ST MARINE REGIMENT. THE 1ST BATTALION WAS
PUT ON OUTPOST HILL NORTHEAST OF CHUNCHON AFTER THE 6TH ROK DIVISION
COLLAPSED IN THE SPRING CCF OFFENSIVE. SUPPORTING US WAS "A" CO, 1ST
TANK BATTALION. I BELIEVE THERE WERE 3 TANKS IN OUR PERMETER ON THE
NIGHT OF THE 23RD. THE 24TH WE WERE ORDERED TO OPEN A HOLE TO THE SOUTH
AS WE WERE SURROUNDED BY THE CHINESE. ABLE COMPANY, 1ST MARINES OPENED
THE HOLE. WHEN THE BATTALION HAD PASSED THROUGH WE PULLED OUT WITH AT
LEAST 2 TANKS STAYING BEHIND TO HELP US. THE CHINESE DID REACH ONE OF
THE TANKS BUT DID NO HARM.

BOTH TANKS WERE LOADED WITH WOUNDED MARINES, THE K.I.A. MARINES WERE
REMOVED TO MAKE ROOM FOR THE W.I.A.'S AFTER THE BATTLE THERE WERE 8
M.I.A. MARINES. FOUR WERE RECOVERED THREE WEEKS LATER, THE OTHER 4
STILL MISSING.

SEVERAL FORMER MARINES I TALKED TO SAID THE TANKS WERE ON THE MSR.
I AM TRYING TO FIND ANY TANKER WHO MIGHT HAVE BEEN IN THOSE TANKS TO
VERIFY IF THEY WERE ON THE MSR. AND IF THEY REMEMBER THE APPROXIMATE
LOCATIONS. I HAVE A 1951 MAP USED BY THE 1ST BN. 1ST MARINES.

AS WE WTIH DREW THE TANKS WERE MOVING BACKWARD FOR A SHORT DISTANCE
FIRING DIRECTLY INTO THE CHINESE. A WOUNDED "B" CO. MARINE HAD CRAWLED
UNDER THE TANK AND STAYED UNDER UNTIL THE HEAT WAS TOO INTENSE. THE TANK
LEFT THE ROAD AND HEADED FOR A CREEK BED GOING SOUTH. THE AREAS WE WERE
IN WAS CALLED HORSESHOE RIDGE, A SMALL PERIMETER ABOUT 500 YARDS AT THE
BASE WHERE THE TANKS WERE. ONE THING A TANKER MIGHT REMEMBER IS THAT A
HELICOPTER WAS SHOT DOWN IN THE PERIMETER THE MORNING OF THE 24TH OF
APRIL.

I AM GOING TO KOREA MONDAY THE 26TH TO TAKE AN ARMY DEMOLITION TEAM TO
THE SITE. I WILL TAKE PIICTURES AND GIVE YOU A CALL WHEN I GET BACK.
THE FULL RECOVERY MISSION BY CIL-HI IS SCHEDULED FOR 26 JULY THROUGH 29
AUGUST OF THIS YEAR.

IF ANY TANKERS RESPOND TO YOUR NEWSLETTER I CAN SEND THEM MAPS AND
PICTURES SO WE MIGHT BE ABLE TO PIN POINT THEIR LOCATION WHEN THE K.I.A.
MARINES WERE REMOVED FROM THEIR TANK.

I UNDERSTAND FROM RED THAT "A" CO. 1ST BN TANKS WERE NORMALLY
SUPPORTING THE 7TH MARINES. AT THIS TIME THE 1ST BN, 1ST MARINES WERE
ATTACHED TO THE 7TH MARINES.

THANKS VERY MUCH FOR YOUR HELP.

Bunker Hill B/1/1

Date: Tue, 02 Mar 1999
From: "Robert G. Davis" Email address

To: Saturn57@aol.com
Subject: Bunker Hill

There is a good article about Bunker Hill in the Nov. 1962 Leatherneck.
I was the Artillery Forward Observer that was there for the first 2 or 3
days. I was assigned to "C" Co. but replaced the initial FO for Baker
Co. There is a picture of my fire team on page 51 of that issue. It
shows the assembly area near the CO's Command Post. B Co 1/1 made the
assault on Bunker on 11 Aug. Lt Col Armitage was the Battalion
Commander.

There are different estimations, but supposedly the Chinese fired
16,000 rounds at Bunker the first 2 days. I think I saw someplace where
the 1st Mar Div fired over 94,000 during the days of heavy fighting.

Over a thousand Chinese assaulted the hill. We were never all the way to
the top and it is written up as a battle where the reverse slope defense
was used. The artillery guns got so hot the rounds fell into our
position, we couldn't stop firing so we moved the rounds out a few yards
until the barrels got hot again. I was called on the carpet for not
firing enough supporting fire, (that's the way I got to know LtCol
Armitage when I was a 2nd Lt), but the fact was that the whole Marine
Division was short of artillery ammo. Fortunately I had an order from
my commander not to fire any counter mortar fire or at Chinese unless I
saw at least 12. I think every Company in the 1st Marines fought at
Bunker. There were about 150 KIAS and about 1500 Wounded. I've seen
the figures some place but can't find them. Rifles and other weapons
were in a stacked as high as your head where Marines had been pulled out
of the Line. Every Marine that fought there did his best. Everyone
should be proud. Everyone should be HONORED, but the sad truth is that
after all of this we moved off the hill and left it for the Chinese. I
won't ever forget the climb down the mountain leading out to Bunker,
crossing the open valley with the Chinese fire, the dead Chinese lying
in the trail, the heat of Korea, the stench of the dead, the smell of
burnt ammo, the holes where the shells landed, the smell of human waste,
the Mortars from the Chinese, the heat, the smell and the filth. The
one good memory is that my whole team (if I miss someone it's been a
long time and I'm sorry) Ball, Cumberpatch, Doucette, Drake, Dubratsky,
Miner, Reading and I (although we got to go out to the Hill twice) all
got back without a scratch. If this is more than you wanted, I'm sorry
but it's the way I remember it.

postscript: I was an Artillery FO with G/3/11 assigned to C/1/1 and all
the others as they were replaced on line. After Pensacola, I was with
VMCJ-3 and spent more years than I can remember at Navy Dallas, with VMF
111, VMF 112 and MAG 41.
