Comments: Here are a few names of fellow service members who still come to mind since my assignment to 67th RTS at Kimpo in 1951-52. Jim Welk (dead), Sal Garafa (dead), George Woods, Bill Keeney, Major Brewer.

I arrived Kimpo from Taegu (Taegu once the point of the Pusan Perimiter) shortly after the Marines had pushed the Chinese out of Kimpo. The hangar was a skeleton and there were tents and very few buildings. The airfield runway was a mess and the surface was being graded and steel mesh laid down. Airplanes flew in to pick up the wounded for flights to Japan. I was assigned 'Crash Camera' from the PIO assignment I had which meant that any airplane crashing on or near Kimpo had to be photograhed. My boss and friend was S/sgt Mike Russo - he and I carried 4x5 Speed Graphics with flash guns - we shot the wrecks as they approached, scattered on the tarmac and then crawled inside to snap photos of the dead and injured. On one terrible day we watched as whole squadrons passed overhead to the north. Captain Moats came out and sat in his Jeep with a camera and the three of us watched the horizon for the first of the B-29s to come smoking in. Our airfield recorded 11 aircraft before the day was over. We heard later this fly-over had been the largest armada of the war and that our neighboring airfields had their share of dead and dying, too.

Comments: I was the Airman First writer for the PIO office at
Kimpo
serving under Major Moats and Staff Sergeant Mike Russo
in 1951-52.
The three of us created hometown news about the wing
and
the base. Major Moats died several years ago from an
auto accident in Florida according to his son. Major
Moats was the finest young officer I had the pleasure
of
knowing. Russo lived near me for several years here in
California and we got together several times to chat
about our war experiences. I have lost contact with
him
and would enjoy his company once again. Advise me if
you
know of him. God Bless the United States of America.
