Comments: It's such a long time but I have been researching some of the places where I served during my 28 year career; Itazuke being one of the most noteworthy. I was there in charge of the officers club from July 1957 until July 1958. I was accompanied by my wife, Gerri and 2 sons, Tom and Dan and daughter Deborah. We added Rebecca to our roster on April 29,1958. It was Emperor Hirohito,s birthday and the local populace was quite ecstatic; bringing gifts to our off-base quarters in S-Bar. The officers club about did me in. I was able to move out of it by the good graces of Colonel Frederick O'Neill, our base commander. I asked him to either move me or return my family to US because I was required to spend such long hours at the club that I rarely saw them. I think it's the only job I ever quit but he had me assigned to be in charge of base commissary where I remained and really enjoyed
duty until 1960. I was also responsible for the Dairy Plant operation which was run by Foremost Daries where some of the most delectable products were manufactured and supplied to our store, Brady (and I think maybe Ashiya before it closed.

Comments: I was stationed at Itazuke from 1965 to 1967. I was a Veterinary Specialist. I helped run the Vet Clinic and did Sanitary and food inspections. I also helped Sgt Larson do bar inspections. I also worked at Hakata, and occasionally made runs to Yamada munition complex. I really enjoyed being stationed at Itazuke.

Comments: I served at Itazuke from Dec 53 to May 57. I was in the hospital twice sometime in 1954. I have no medical records, but need them, especially the exact dates I was in the hospital. Can anyone advise? Fukuoka Airport sits on top of the efforts of the US Army 802 and 803rd Army engineers who hauled gravel from Dazaifu filling in the rice patties to the East (ocean side). It was an amazing amount of gravel. There was a plaque at the end of the runway there telling how much. I saw it years later around 1986 but don't know now! The AF constructed a F100 parking area where Fukuoka Terminals stand (I think the cargo terminal, perhaps others. I was a security Policemen (Air Police then). We were a Squadron under the 58th Fighter Bomb Wing in Korea (Kimpo as I remember). A friend from Massachusetts, John Klein in my outfit was killed on take off in a T-33 which was an Airman of the month award given to him. It was sad, he was a great young man. I saw an F-100 take the wing off a C-47. Both were in the landing pattern but the F-100's pattern was too broad. I saw an F-86 D land wheels up by mistake. There were a lot of experiences!

Comments: I arrived at Itazuke in late summer 1950. At time it
was the 8th Ftr Wg and later changed to the 6160 AB
Wg. I was a medical tech and immediately assigned to
the crash house on the strip. In Jan 1951, I was
assigned to the Boat Detachment in Fukuoka, which
became the 22nd Crash Rescue Boat Squadron, where I
remained until Sep 1953. I served in many locations
in both South and North Korea and Japan before
finally becoming NCOIC of the Medical Section.
Despite the hazards involved, that was one of the
most enjoyable periods of my life.

Comments: My father was an OSI special agent at Itazuke in the late '50's, Perry O. Williams, also known as PO or POW. He was friends with Dave Curry, also from North Carolina. I grew up laying in the floor listening to "Itazuke Tower" by Oscar Brand on the hi-fi while my parents sang along. He had some assignments in Korea and I can remember pictures of pheasant hunting in Chegedo (sp?).

As an AF Brat this is as close to a hometown as I have. When we left some time in 1960, I was two and half years old. I don't know if it was true, but was told my vocabulary at the time consisted of more Japanese than English.
