Comments: Hallo. I am trying to find some information for a close family friend who remembers being on a troop carrier in Korea in 1951. His memory is a bit vague as to which ship he was on, but he was a crew member on the Waterman, Zuider Kruis and Groote Beer in at least 1951 until he migrated to Australia in 1952. He has a small photograph of himself standing behind an American serviceman pretending to pour water on the serviceman out of a watering can as a joke. The photo is captioned SS Waterman 1951 Korea. We have found no reference to any of the abovenamed three ships being seconded from being ordinary freight carriers to Dutch troop carriers at any time during the Korean War. My friend, Ary van Zanten has been invited to join the Australian Returned Servicemen's League but needs to prove his war service. Apparently the time he spent in the Dutch Resistance is not sufficient but as a crew member on a Dutch troop carrier is, so he needs to provide the evidence. Ary is now in his mid 80s so of course time is running out. Any information would be of great help to us.
Many thanks in anticipation of any reply.

I would be very grateful if you could share any memory you may have. Duck has died in 2007. I hope to learn more about his time there. Obviously, time is running out and online resources are rare.

Comments: A friend of mine whose father fought during the Korean war with the
Dutch "Indiian Head" contingent has a picture of her father with a
young Korean girl who was "adopted" by the Dutch contingent at some
time during the Korean war.
The soldier on the picture is
Hendricus Adrianus Cornelis van Dorenmalen. He enlisted twice.
And the little girl on the picture was known as "Koia".
Koia would be in her sixties now.
We are wondering if anyone remembers the little girl "Koia" and
perhaps even knows what became of her.
To get in touch with "Koia" would be a dream come true for my friend.
Any other relevant information would also be welcome.
I thank you for your help,
Françoise Faulkner-Trine

Being a guest of the Korean Government last October 2000, I could not believe my eyes when we landed in Seoul. What a difference from 1953 till the present. of all the changes from a country that was completely demolished to now a World City.I'm sure that everyone who served in Korea could be proud of the changes that happened in Korea. It's just to bad that we had to leave so many of our comrades behind us, but they are well looked after. "May God bless them all"
