Comments: Hi, I am trying to find information on my father John(Johnny) McDonnell. He was from Tipperary in Ireland. He wouldn't tell us much of his time in Korea but he was a POW for a number of years and may have been wounded at some stage as he had a number of bad scars on his legs. He told me he was captured after crossing the Yalu river. And was a Pow for a long while. He was young at the time as he was born in 1931. I think he may have been conscripted in Yorkshire, previous to this he lived in Portsmouth and London. He stayed in the British army when released from North Korea as I know he was in Hong Kong in 1954 and after in Bremen Haven in Germany. He said he couldn't face leaving. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Comments: Pte J H Rodger. James Hamilton Rodger service number 22380289 was on hill 317 Maryang san assigned to B company the 1st Battalion KOSB. On the night of 4 Nov 1951 he was declared missing then announced KIA on 5 Nov 1951 aged 22yrs with no known resting place. Does anyone remember Jim or have any contemporary information on what actually happened on 4th and 5th Nov1951. I was told by my late father, Jims only brother that he was killed whilst manning his Bren gun and being overrun by the Chinese advance. I was also told that Jim may have been wounded by Mortar fire, and carried by his fellow KOSB mates taken prisoner but prior to reaching the prison camp the Chinese captors shot and killed him at the roadside. Is there any truth in this version, if so where was he shot and buried.

I would be most grateful for any information, field notes a photograph etc.

Comments: How would I go about finding out about a family story? I was told my father (James Allen Varney) was an RAF pilot who flew in the Korean War (1950-1953 he would have been 22-25yo) and was shot down and held as a POW for six months. He had a scar on his right temple, which I had assumed came from being shot down. He never spoke of it and he died when I was 17 (23 years ago). He was born in Glasgow, Scotland and was a British citizen until he came to the US in 1963. I can confirm that he was in the RAF and I believe he left the service in 1961.

Comments: Yes, unfortunately it is true. After working for NSA while in the military and living in Northern China 2002-2007 near the North Korean border I have learned from many witnesses there are a number of American and possibly British POWs still being held in North Korea. The governments know about this but declare them "missing, presumed dead" or "chose to stay". Therefore I share my information with everyone in hopes something will be done soon to get these men back.
