Comments: My grand-dad John Dewey Reedy was a P.O.W for 33 months. I know he did time in Camp 5 but I don't know if he was anywhere else. I have all his letters to his mother and father from inside the camp and am still trying to read them. They were mostly written on rice paper, so they're fading. He died in 1988 of heart failure. Most of us think it was from the war. If anyone has information about him or if you knew him, please contact me. Thank You.

Comments: As an educator and Korean War researcher, this topic is of great interest to me – and generates lots of questions! (Where did you find the stamina? As participants were you given extra rations to build up strength? Were there other incentives – or punishment for non-participation? Were you allowed to speak freely with other POWs? Was there outside media or coverage? Who was the propaganda meant to convince or impress?) My husband Michael and I will be giving an informational presentation on these games at the Center for the Study of the Korean War’s annual conference in Independence, MO on February 27, 2004. (Link to CSKW at http://www.graceland.edu/koreanwar/index.html) In addition to our upcoming presentation, there is the possibility that this could develop into a book project, since it is a subject which begs for additional coverage. We would welcome any and all correspondence, as well as recollections of veterans or family members (including photos, of course) relating to the “Olympics” in 1952. As I understand from some readings, there were more games in 1953; we’d be glad for any information about those also! If there are any veterans in the Kansas City area, we would also be glad to speak with you concerning participation in the conference. If you're seeing this message after 2/27, we would still be grateful for any information or recollections. Please contact us at acasey@graceland.edu or caseym@graceland.edu .
