Comments: I served a motion picture operator and Radiological Safety Officer during my tour. I had a captain's mast for painting 2" pink polka-dots on a dust cover that I had made to protect a spare engine cylinder head from damage. The painting I DID AT THE EXPLICIT direction of my supervisor.
I have photos. Contact me by email.

Thanks.

I was just a kid at 17 when I boarded in April 1952 so I kind of grew

up in Japan and Korea. I guess I wasn't real popular.

Comments: I went aboard the Hewell in Guam in Mar 1951 and stayed until Dec 1952. Went aboard right out of boot camp from CO.638. We trained around the islands hauling coconut shells for a couple months and then went to Korea to haul ammo from Japan. Have a map that I drew the routes on it when we went to Korea from Japan. As I remember it, Dennis Smith went aboard at the same time I did. He became the yoeman and I relieved Robert Pergande and trained under a first class named Adams. Some of the names I remember are Smith, Robertson, Williams, Presley, Adams, Jenkins, also a Wilburn who went on emergency leave when his dad had a heart attack and borrowed $20 from me -- he never did come back to the ship, or my $20 either. I can see other people but haven't been able to put names with faces. Also an Acthley who was from the South and he and I fished the laundry boys bicycle out of the drink. I do have a 8mm movie from the Hewell. Would be glad to talk to anyone that is interested.

Comments: I have some pictures of returning POWs during the repatriations during Sept 1953 at Inchon. One appears to be of enlisted men, one appears to be of Officers.
If somw of these POWs reads this and remember being in Inchon during this time I would be glad to share the pictures. There is a band playing in the back ground as you can see the player and the instruments.
Anyone from the period May 1951 thur Nov 1954 who might have served on any of the ships above at the same time I did send me an email.\\

Comments: I winter in Florida and summer in Minnesota. I looked up and visited with Rudy Garcia in Mesa Arizona and tried to find Leonard Reeves in Dublin Georgia but struck out. I would be interested in talking with some of my old shipmates if they are still around. One of them tried calling me in Minnesota and left word on my machine without a name or number so I am puzzled as to who it was and please leave your name and number next time. Cheers!!!

Keywords: I was a Boatswain Mate Seaman and served on the USS Hewell AKL-14 from 52-54 and moved onto the USS Jason ARH-1 after that. We were based in Sasebo Japan and transported ammo and other goods to our troops serving in Korea. We were a large family with everybody knowing everybody else although I am hard pressed to remember names this many years. Rudy Garcia,Leonard Reeves, Doug Greene,Captain Preston, Turner are some of the names I can still remember. Are there any others still out there?

Comments: My dad, William Howard Hall, was an EM1 on the USS Hewell AKL 14 during the Korean conflict. He also served on the USS Strategy during WWII. Dad passed away in 2004, but he often spoke to me about his time on the Hewell. If any of his shipmates remember him, I'd appreciate any stories you could tell me about his service on the Hewell. Thanks!

Comments: I went aboard after boot camp and was striking for electrian, but soon became the "logroom yeoman" and then decided to be a storekeeper. I remember HMl Joseph Bergen, EM1 Dombeck, Dennis Smith, SN Keck, LT. Stan Jaworski - the skipper, but I would like to hear from anyone that had served aboard the Hewell and I would really appre-ciate a snapshot of the ship. Any snapshot that I may have had is gone.

Keywords: My nickname was "Perk". The hull designation was changed from AG-145 to AKL-14 shortly after I was assigned to the ship.

Comments: Looking for former shipmates that served on the
USS Hewell AKL-14 from December 1952 to April
1954. I have contacted one from Minnesota, Tom
McGuire and will try to meet him this spring as
he travels near my home. I can remember a few
with the following last names: Reeves, Turner,
Emery, and Preston [Captain]. I'm sure that I would reconize others if I heard their names called. I was a Metalsmith 2nd class when I got
off the ship. I bunked on the top deck aft, over the engine room.

Comments: I have fond memories of the tour of duty aboard the U.S.S. HEWELL - AKL-14. For other information concerning the Hewell, she was used in filming the movie, "Mr. Roberts." Some say that the ESTERO was used in the follow-up movie, "Ensign PUlver." I doubt that to be correct. I think it was also the Hewell. Hope this helps finds some old shipmates.
