Comments: To all,
Since Chinhae's famous Duffy's (Tavern, EM Club, Bar, All Hands Club) has closed it's doors last week, there are a few of us here currently on base who would like to keep it's memory around.
I would like to ask all of you out there who have sat at the bar to send us your stories and most importantly photographs of Duffy's past.
The real important information we are looking for is as follows:
-The full story of Duffy's beginnings
-The year it was first established
-The story of the name
-The exact location of the original bar
-Was the original building a Japanese structure

Thank you all for your help in keeping a legendary bars history around.

Comments: Today, Wednesday, 16 Sep 2015 Duffys Tavern on the Navy Base in Chinhae (Commander Fleet Activities, Chinhae, CFAC), Korea is closing. After 63 years (give or take) the powers that be have decided Duffys has run her course and it should be shut down. Having a small party tonight and was researching Duffys history when I ran across this website. I'll be sure to pass on the notes posted relating to Duffys to those present tonight.
It's a sad day in Korea......

Comments: I have a somewhat large bell that was passed on to me by my grandmother (and passed on to her by someone else). It reads Lt. RL Marshall Chin Hae Feb. 1964 on one side . On the other: Naval Advisory Group Korea

I assume this was something given to all members of the advisory group. Any help or information about the provenance of this would be appreciated.

took captains gig to liberty. We all went to Duffy's
Tavern where we drank and had short time cab ride
experiances. Captain Jack Ready enjoyed knowing his
crew truly unwound and had a ball. Jan 1981.

Comments: Iwas an ET stationed at Chinhae from mid-51 until mid-52.As "Archie" I was one of the founding group of "Duffy's Tavern". One of the guys was named Duffy but I don't remember his first name or rate. I think that he would have been either an ET or a Sonarman. Our Chief was RMC M. H. Suttman, there was an ET1 Mellon and an ET2 Glenn. My first CO was a Lt. Commander (I don't remember his name--there are a lot of Senior Moments here). He was replaced by Lt. Patterson. We had a cook named Kim, a driver name Pak and a translator named Pak.

"Please be advised that my fellow officers and
crew of the USS Abbot (DD629), flagship of
Destroyer Division 242,for operations as an
element of Task Group 70.2 in July 1954, were
awarded the Korean Service Medal and the
United Nations Service Medal by authority of
Commander Naval Forces Far East dispatch
090505Z of DEC 1954.

In 1993, authority was granted via the Navy
Liaison Office in St. Louis, MO for these same
men to also wear the Korean Presidential Unit
Citation.

In August 2001, by ref: (a) SECNAVINST
1650.1F and (b) Public Law 106-65, DAA
FY2000; the CNO has also started awarding
them (on an individual application basis)- the
Combat Action Ribbon.

I would be very proud to see the Abbot
included in your,"Looking For

You both are to commended for the truly
outstanding job that you have already done-
and continue to do."

Comments: Thanks for your effort to help the veterans and their families as they seek comfort, information, closure and comrades who are still so young in our minds.

Please include the United States Naval Advisory Group, Chinhae, Korea. I was there in 1953 and would appreciate information about my old pals. My best friend was Frank Vaughan or Vaughn. I would give anything to know his whereabouts, and his status.

Ted~thanks for responding to my inquiry. As far as I know the USNAG, Chinhae, Korea, which is about 50 miles NW of Pusan, was set up to assist the South Korean Navy. Our government gave them many PT boats, gunships, and LSSL's. (landing ship supply, large). Our job was to teach the South Korean Navy personnel to repair all the equipment associated with these ships. They were referred to as the ROKN (Republic of Korean Navy). Our base was established around 1952, and I believe it is still in commission. We lived in houses that were built for the Japanese Army and Navy officers during their occupation of Korea in the 30's or 40's. About 60 men served in this USNAG unit. The skipper was a commander, as I recall, and had probably 8 officers. 20 or so chief petty officers lived in a separate house, as did the officers. We rented a house in the downtown area and named it DUFFY'S TAVERN.
