I'm looking for anyone who may have served with him, traveled on this ship or who has any information about the O'Connell, particularly exactly what cargoes she may have carried. I am not sure , but think we left from San Francisco, though I have seen Seattle also?
My mom wrote a 6 pg journal so if ANYONE else was on that 15 day voyage I will gladly share her story.
I have family trees on Ancestry, have tried to find our ship, finally saw it listed in her journal!! Ship name was mistyped, but it is USS General H.W.Butner, found all the stats on Wikipedia, but not under passenger lists on Ancestry!
This is especially important to me because my sister, Kathleen Marie Parker (Kay), was killed in freak accident while in Okinawa ( flower box fell on her and crushed internal organs.) I finally found the record of her death on a document from American Foreign Service Headed REPORT OF DEATH OF AMERICAN CITIZEN. She died on May 3, 1952, shy of her 4th birthday, at Uchitemari, Okinawa, at Ryukyus Army Hospital.
My Dad's assignment was immediately terminated, as is policy following death), and we flew back to US with Kay's casket. Both parents died ( dad was 63 and died in 1989), retired from AF as squadron Commander at Lockbourn AFB, Columbus ( then became Rickenbacher ) , not sure of spelling), in 1972 as Lt. Col with 29 and a half years! Would have stayed in but President Nixon called via secure line from WHITE HOUSE ( believe Nixon not on the line but Sec. Of AF or Defense! Call was to inform my DAD that Nixon had hand picked him to be test pilot of some jet at that time! He was soooo not happy, gave a few expletives and said Nixon can go F*** himself and hung up, immediately put in retirement papers!!!! He was so angry that Nixon had JUST been in TV with speech saying drawing down Vietnam troops BUT WAS JUST MOVING units to Thailand!!!!! And his 91st Air Refueling Squadron, that he commanded, had been PROMISED they would NOT be deployed again! Furious to squadron and was not going to continue!
Soooo, that was MY DAD! Proud as Hell of him, he was pilot for Bob Hope's 1967 Christmas Vietnam Tour, and he always said that was his BIGGEST thrill! Considered to pilot to be picked for that previous cargo, and my dad had most experience there at that time!
So would love to get info on ship voyage !! Or any feedback from military still alive from his unit!!
Love to all those who traveled abroad to be with military spouses! This was Kotean War era I believe. . .

Keywords: I'm looking for documentation of the voyage of the USS
General Butner sailing from NY to Bremerhaven, Germany
in October, 1954. We got caught in the remnants of
Hurricane Hazel and had quite a ride for several days.
Anyone serving on this ship or was a passenger who has
information on this trip, I would be happy to
correspond with you. God Bless all of our troops!

Comments: Dwight Hutchin and my brother, Charles Brewington Jr.,
were buddies and served together during the Korean
War.Recently while looking from some of our old
records, I found that Dwight Hutchinson served as
First Officer of the Gen Rose, and was on duty during
the last week of February 1956. I would appreciate any
information or advice concerning Dwight Hutchinson.
He may be from Florida and was about eighteen years
old during the Korean War.

Comments: We left Munich Germany, took the USS Upshur to New
York in the early to mid 1960's. My stepfather was
Army Msgt Thomas E. Meredith.
I am looking for information from that time period in
Germany and on the Munich Germany to New York via USS
Upshur run. And / or from that time period in Germany
from anyone who may have known him or our family.
I don't have all the facts as my Mother passed away
and they are both gone now. She had a picture of me
as a little girl on the USS Upshur on the way home
from Germany.
I want to put in writing what I know or can find out
about our family history, including where we have
been, and what we did. I never got our history, or
stories about their lives, from my parents and I
deeply regret leaving it for too long. I'd like to
leave as much as I can to pass on to my family.
Any information would be appreciated. Thank You
