Comments: Anyone out there who went with Lt Rahm and WO Durkin on detachment from Wonson about Oct. 17, via LST to Hungnam, then NE of Hamhung where we guarded stores, manned road blocks, etc. Left during withdrawal in late December. We left on a disabled LCI that took us to Wonson, before hitching ride on LST to Japan getting back about Jan. 1.. I have many pictures of this adventure. I think there may have been only about 10 of us in this detachment.

Comments: My orders came while tied up in Yokosuka, transferring to Camp McGill. I was serving on an LST at the time and remember being blown away by my good luck. It was sometime in 1955-1956. My new duty station was a Boat unit 1 that was part of the ACB 1. I was just a kid and my job was one of little importance and spent the majority my time running errands or fetching parts. We were repairing and maintaining outboard motor causeways and part of my mid watch was spent down at the docks with an empty M1.
I recall that the barracks where I lived was shared by a UDT team but have little recall of meeting any of them. I think they stayed to themselves.
Those were good years and I have happy memories of my time there, especially the time with Shiecko (sp) Ono. I'm 78 years old now and will take these memories to my grave.

Our detachment CO was Lt. G.C. Rahm. Anyone out
there remember our group? We appeared to be lost to
the Navy during that hard winter during Chinese
intervention and basically lived off the land on
liberated army rations and uniform parts. We had no
equipment so acted as stevedores, rode shotgun on
supply trucks, manned road blocks, etc. When we
returned to Japan we were first to arrive at Camp
McGill and was told that the 104th was now ACBl.

Comments: Guess there are not many of us left who boarded the USNS A.W. BREWSTER in San Diego and crossed the dateline on 22 August 1952, on the way to Camp McGill, Japan. I remember we docked in Kobe and rode the train to Yokosuka. My fondest memory is when the train conductor came into our car and was saying something in Japanese. We did not understand Japanese, so we did not pay any attention to what he was saying. A few minutes later, the train entered a tunnel and smoke came pouring into the car. It was warm and all of the windows were open and at that time, the trains were all coal burning. Well, the next time that conductor came into our car and said something, we all rushed to the windows and closed them! It was back to Coronado in '53 and back to Camp McGill in '54.

Comments: Just found this site, looks like a lot of guys have been at it for a few years. Really interesting to read the postings.Personally I went in in July 1950 and left Great Lakes for Coronado in Oct. Up to Huneme for basic electric school after the first month or so then did the resupply to PT.Barrow Ak the following July. On to Japan and McGill, after a winter there got a second school at Hueneme and was on individual orders for the trip back, flew out of Tokyo to SanFran and advanced school. Back to Japan, McGill, and into Inchon early 1953. Goofiest thing I got involved in was helping deliver a couple of LCM's up on the Imjin river. They were needed for a ferry because their pontoon bridges were getting knocked out by mortor and artillery. We took 'em up right to the river beside Pork Chop hill. We hauled them up on empty tank retrevers, everyone had to get off the dirt roads when we went by. Freedom Village at Panmunjom was just being built to recieve the prisoner exchange so we looked it over when we passed through there as we returned to Inchon. All in all I really had four years of fond memories while in 'ol ACB one. By the way guys the unit was still known as the 104th construction battalion when I first got there, and within a couple of weeks it assumed the name of ACB 1. Great guys good officers. It has accumulated a lot of history since then, having been active in all of the battles around the world up to date.

Comments: I arrived at Takeyama (Camp McGill) late in September, 1954. It was good duty, having liberty when not on duty. I helped close the USN part of the camp and was transferred to Naval Base, Yokosuka in January, 1958. What I remember most was the frequent earthquakes and the storms. Naval Beaching Group 1 was comprised of Amphibious Construction Battalion 1, Boat Unit 1, Beachmasters Unit 1, and an Underwater Demolition Unit. The UDT unit (I forget the number) was forever bringing us abalone to cook for them. They practiced off Nagai beach. I still have Commander Sibitsky's signature on my first DD214. He was said to be a "mustang officer." I'd do it all over again, if they'd let me. On Maplandia, I see the buildings are still there, although the powerhouse is gone.
