History of the 5th Communications Group
The 5th Communications Group was born in Seoul, Korea on 25 November
1951. It's parent organization was the 934th Signal Battalion, Separate
(TAC), which arrived in Korea shortly after the outbreak of hostilities
in 1950. The 934th supplied the communications network for the 5th Air
Force during the bitter fighting in the retreat to the Pusan perimeter
and the advance to Pyongyang and the Chongjin reservoir. Men of the
934th fought with the Marines at Chongjin and with the ground forces at
Pyongyang. At the second evacation of Seoul, 934th men were among the
last to leave, destroying part of their equipment which could not be
evacuated.
The 934th earned four battle stars and the Distinguished Unit Citation
during the Korean Campaign. This was the legacy given to the 5th
Communications Group at the ceremony, when the 934th was deactivated and
the 5th Communications Group was born. The history of the 5th Comm Group
in Korea is a story of getting the messages through in the face of
overwhelming difficulties. It is the story of men who worked as much as
sixty hours straight, without sleep - of men who fought off guerilla
attacks so that the circuits could be kept in operation - of men who
didn't know how to quit. They built a reputation that lives on, long
after the war in Korea has ended.
The following squadrons made up the 5th Communications Group and along
with the men of the 934th Signal Battalion, Separate (TAC), will be
represented at our reunions:
Telephone & Carrier Squadron
1st Radio Squadron
7th Communications Squadron
2nd Communications Squadron
2nd Radio Relay Squadron

Re: 934th Signal Bn, 5th Com Group
I don't think that I mentioned that before I went with the 6150th.
I had been with the 934th Signal Batallion of the 5th Comm. Grp.
And it was while with the 934th that I was attached to the Marines
at Inchon. I did not go to the 6150th until Spring? of 1951.
I served with the 1st Marines from Inchon to Wonsan to Hagaru - ri to
the Yalu and returned by Lst 898 from Hungnam to Pusan on Christmas
Eve,1950; the 1st Cavalry Division; British 28th Bgde - with who I was
wounded on 08 October, 1951; Capital ROK Division; 1st ROK Division.
I was was with the 6150th Sqdn. of the 6147 Tactical Air Control Group.
My Sqdn. was known as the Radio Jeep outfit and directed all the air
stikes by carrier and land based aircraft.
Our designation was Tactical Air Control Party ie TACP and consisted
of an officer, usually from a fighter-bomber wing and 2 enlisted men
- a radio operator, me, and a mechanic.
Total time in Korea Sept./50 to April/52. I belong to a veterans
group which operates under the name "Mosquitos" but unfortunately
most in the group served after I left Korea and I have only found one
TACP member whom I know.
