Dear Mr. Barker, Please send me information on your korean book and video. I am the reunion coordinator for a Panmunjom Joint Security Area reunion scheduled for September 27-29, 1996 in St. Louis. We were the soldiers who provided security at JSA and provided transportation for the Swiss and Swede Generals stationed there. We have not gotten together for 26 years and I have found 100 of us and thought it was time we had a reunion. If possible I would like to show some of your video to give us some idea how things had changed and also stayed the same. I have some movies of the DMZ and many pictures of patrols, etc. I also received the "Injim Scout" award. Our LP was Johnson and yes, we spent many 3 day session on "3 day hunter-killer" patrols, in the heat of summer and the cold of winter. When I was due to come back in February 68, the Pueble was taken and all of us due out at that time were extended until the situation cooled down. A question, does having received the "Injim Scott Award" for the work on the Korean DMZ quality me for a CIB. The "CIB" has been on my record since I can remember but I have no recollection of it being awarded to me, of course sometimes I (we) was not in any condition to recollect much of times or situations while at the camps or LPs. If you can clarify this for me I would really appreciate it and if I can be of any assistance to you, I would be more than willing to help in any way possible. Reading this web page brought back some memories for me. Thanks; John Mosqueda Duncanville, Texas
On Fri, 13 Nov 1998 John Mosqueda Email address wrote: In winter of 1967, the 6 man patrol on the DMZ was randomly roaming the square click that was assigned to us. We were walking on the levy of some old rice paddies full of water from snow fall. We came upon a gap in the levy that was about 7 to 8 feet wide and full of water. The patrol members jumped across 1 at a time. I was the last one. At that time I was carrying a Pric 47 on my back. As I attempted to jump across, I did not make it across. When I hit the water, I went under about 10 feet before I knew that there wasn't any bottom. I started to swim upward and when I got to the top of the water, the other team members helped me out of what turned out to be an old water well. The temperature was about 20 degrees at the time. We had to call LP Johnson to ask for special permission to start a fire to dry my clothes and insure that I did not freeze to death. We were not allowed to have fires on the DMZ because it would give our position away(smoke). I was put under ponchos and covers while my clothes dried by the fire. Needless to say, that was not a good day for me on that 3 day hunter/killer patrol.

I was a young soldier in the 7 Infantry, 127 Signal Battalion A Company in Korea, from March 1968 to May 1969. This is the first article that ever mentioned any type of military conflict occurring on the DMZ since the conclusion of the Korean War. I usually do not talk about this time period since most people are not familiar with what had occurred there. At the time the Vietnam war was at it's peak and over shadowed other news occurrences. The situation of not having enough NCO?s placed me into the position of being a team chief with just the rank of PFC for a Radio Relay Team. When I arrived in Korea in the spring of 68, I was part of a quick react team. Any time day or night we only had ten minutes to get our gear and fall in. Later that fall I was assigned to the NCO academy for the testing of qualified individuals for a CIB. This time too, I was a PFC while other members of the team was E-5 or above. I really enjoyed this temporary assignment since I had a pass every nite to Tongduchon and the NCO mess hall had good food. On my second tour the only thing I first recognized from 68 was Yongsan. Seoul had turned into a thriving and lively city and growing everyday. Every where I went in Korea I saw prosperity and a people hard at work to make it a better place to live. As part of the response to the USS Pueblo incident, the 4th Tactical Fighter Wing from Seymour Johnson AFB, NC was sent to Kunsan AB. I was a member of the 4th, an INS technician working on the F-4Ds. I recall that our backseaters were bored flying across the Pacific, so they kept their Fire Control Radar system in Operate mode. Consequently, when they landed at Kunsan, 74 of 75 aircraft had useless radar sets. The weather was miserable; 20 below zero and a 30-knot wind. And we had to get all the birds back to 100% ASAP. We came over in January and returned home in July. We left one crew in Korea somewhere. The enlisted folks never heard what happened to that one bird. It took off and never returned. The 51st Composite Wing and the 13th TFS would be good sources for the second Korean Offensive. Keep 'em flying. Dan Decker, TSgt USAF Retired
