89th Medium Tank Battalion - US Army

The 89th Med tank Bn. was what would be an orphan outfit, it was used where it was needed. We served with the 24th Div, 1st Cav. Div., Turks and the 25th Div.

Dear Bill,

My dad was a member of the 89th medium tank bn. (D company) from
late 1950 into 1952. His name is Whit Hammond. He was a loader,
and then a gunner on a M-4 tank.

He went to the Yalu River, Chosin Reservoir, fought alongside Turks,
and English UN forces.

Company commander's name was Captain Scutt. Lieutenant Hatch was the
field officer. He is looking for the driver, who's last name may
have been Englebert. Another name: CPL Frietag.

He will try to remember some more names, we will write again. We
would love to hear from you. Would it be possible to get a roster?

Best regards,
Hope Kenney

I am interested in finding out about a reunion of the 89th Tank
Batallion attached to the 25th Infantry Division during the Korean War.

I took basic at Fort Knox with the 3rd armored division and then I was
with the 89th tank division attached to the 25th infantry division. I
served during July of 52 and August 53.

Dear Mr. Barker,

I am a novice at this whole computer thing but I did find your
Korean War Project file. I don't know how to download or even if I
can do that. I am looking for information on my father who was
initially listed as mia and then because of circumstances, it was
changed to kia. We never got his body back and we do not believe he
had a Christian burial there either. He was listed as missing at the
Yalu River attack in Nov. of 1950 and then as kia in Dec 1950. I don't
expect that you would have any information but I thought I would
give it a try.

Thanks so much for your efforts in putting this together.
God Bless You ! Nancy D. Morand

From: AKBLACKLEY@aol.com

Date: Wed, 21 Aug 1996

Mr. Barker: My dad Andrew K. Blackley was a tanker with the Assault Gun
Platoon of the 89th. He was at Ipsok with Easy Co. 27th. Inf. when Capt.
Desiderio was killed (won Medal of Honor) the Assualt Gun Platoon got a
Presidentiial Unit Citation. A picture of my dad and the platoon is in
the front of a book on the M-4 Sherman Tank currently available at
Borders, etc ( I don't remember the exact title off hand ( i gave the
book to dad) but if some one needs it please e-mail me).

The "Easy Eights" of this unit had distinctive tiger faces painted on
them for the Spring '51 offensive. My dad also recalls carrying members
of the Argyll and Sutherland Division into action.

I have a copy of the Battalion "memory" book (pub. in 1951-52) and
some photos. Would love to hear from others members and relatives of
this unit (so would my dad).

My father was an wheeled vehicle maintenance instructor at the ITo Jima
School when he was alerted and shipped to the Tokyo Depot to bring the
tanks up to speed. He has told me stories about crossing the Sea of
Japan during a Typhoon and also about receiving orderes that they may
have to fight their way up the beach when they landed a Pusan. He was
in Headquarters and Service Company. He was with the 89th up thru the
retrograde from the Yalu, then he was hospitalized for an illness. He
was shipped back to CONUS but returned a short while later to be
assigned to a depot at Puson. But he managed to get back with the 89th.

MSG Matthews USA ret. inquired about SGT. Andrew J. McKinley.

My battalion memory book says he was in Company D, and also lists
him amoung those killed in action. My dad was also at Ito Jima and told
me that many guys in the training school there were in Company D,
which as formed later than the fisrt three companies. As I understand
it the mechanics including my dad, were occupied getting the tanks
out of mothballs.
My dad later went into the Assualt Gun Platoon.

Hope this helps.

I have about 75 letters he wrote to my dad and uncle (both who died

memory. I am quite computer illiterate, have 4 children,, work fulltime
but this is my passion.

I am looking for anyone who served with him 89th Tank Bn. Am really
seeking the medical records as the letter to my grandmother says he was
killed instantly but a buddy with him said that was not true-that he
died the next day.

How do I get those records? He was a private, tank driver although he
was on guard duty when he was killed, not in a tank. I do
appreciate your help, I know you too have time limitations.
