KIA - Heartbreak Ridge

Re: Hill 931

I would like very much to get in contact with SFC Harris. I think my
uncle was with his division on Heartbreak Ridge. You see...my
uncle was 21 and got killed at Heatbreak Ridge on October 20, 1951.

He wasn't married so he has do desendents to 'remember' him. I want
to make sure his story isn't forgotten by the family who knows very
little about his Army career and all.

It was reported to Charles' parents by an Army buddy of Charles' (last
known location somewhere in CA), that Charles was killed on Heartbreak
Ridge (Hill 931). According to information I received from the
Veterans of Foreign Wars,

June/July 1993 issue, the Battle of Heartbreak Ridge was faught from
Sept 13 - Oct 15, 1951. "2nd Infantry Division seizes Heartbreak
Ridge: 597 killed in Action (KIA); 3,064 wounded in action (WIA); 84
missing in action (MIA).

The 23rd regiment alone takes 1,832 casualties.

I hope you can help me.

KATUSA

On forty four years ago my father had served in KATUSA(Korean
Augmentation Troops to United States Army). He says that he underwent
severe hardship during the Korean War. When recollecting those hard
days of the war, my father misses his comrades in arms. He is looking
forward to establishing his contact with any of them. Almost of his
comrades in arms are faintly remembered, but the comrade in arms who
was reported on “Tropic Lightning News” page 4, April
2, 1953 is certainly remembered. He wants to seek for his old friends.

A journal : Tropic Lightning News
Date: April 2, 1953
Unit: Golden dragon soldiers under 3rd Battalion Commander Lt. Col.
Harold R. Kennedy, Captain Earl G. Smith.

My father , Tae Im Oh , SOUTH KOREA

Please let my father contact with Cpt Smith at that time and his other
old friends, if possible.

I can’t express myself in good English, especially speaking. My
address are below.

KyungEun Oh
1609 Pleasant St. #306
Lauderdale, MN, 55108

And, his old friend's name was probably C.F. Cornell.
I guess the spelling of his last name from my father's pronounciation.
My father is not sure but his home state was Illinois. He was a kind of
officer. I don't know the exact term about it also. When I know the
terms in English, I will let you know about them. I will contact with
you through Dr. MooSung Lee's e-mail address next time too.

Thank you for your concern again.

As a machine gunner with H company, I learned to sympathize with pack
mules.

My tripod weighed 53 pounds and the water-cooled machine gun weighed 42
pounds.

Also, because this weapon could fire at a maximum rate of 600 rounds
per minute and a sustained rate of 180 rounds per minute, my assistant
gunner, my KATUSA ammo bearer, and myself carried many 5000-round cases
of 30-caliber, linked, machine-gun ammo from the supply point to our
machine-gun position.

Occasionally, after several weeks on line, two men from each Infantry
Company got 48 hours of “little R&R” behind the lines. The Corps of
Engineers pumped water from a rocky stream bed to makeshift showers set
up in a tent. We discarded our rotted fatigues and underwear and
enjoyed our first bath in weeks.

I May 1953 the 25th division was ordered to guard Seoul. On May 28th the
enemy began an all out push on Seoul. The division held its ground and
the assault was repulsed, the brunt of the attack was asorbed by our
14th infantry Golden Dragons. We defended Seoul from continued enemy
attacks from May to June of 1953, earning our division its second
Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Sitation. Any one who fought in

He has hoped for years to try and locate his war buddy by the name of
