I learned about this website this morning while listening to the Armstrong and
Getty radio show.

My dad, William (Bill) Waltz, served in Korea as a Marine (artillery). He passed
away on February 12, 2021 from complications of pulmonary fibrosis he contracted
from breathing smoke released from shooting the guns. Another casaulty of the
war. But he lived a long and fulfilling life.

Dad taught us kids to love our country and to know that peace is never free.

Semper fi dad.

Looking for my uncle, Pfc Thomas J Heitic. He served with the 1st Mar Div
during WWII and Korea. He had no children, never talked about his experiences.
We found a letter from him to our dad. The return address only had D-2-14th
Marines, 1st Marine Div FMF in Korea. We are trying to find out about him to
add to our families' military history. Our dad and all of our uncles served in
WWII. Tom was the only Marine. I can't get anything from the archives without
more information. Would appreciate any help. Thank you.

Finding Your Loved OneUSMC Muster Rolls 1798 to 1958

I see many people seeking information on relatives and
friends who served with the Marines in Korea. As a start it
is helpful to find out the unit in which they served and
their time in Korea. To help find an answer to these
questions Ancestry.com has USMC Muster Rolls up through 1958
on-line. While Ancestry.com is a fee-service they offer a
short free--trial period or most large city public libraries
have it available for in-library use at no charge.

The muster rolls are located in Ancestrys Military Records
section. From Ancestrys SEARCH drop-down box look for the
USMC Muster Rolls in the box on the lower right of the
Military Records page.

To locate a person you need to enter first name, middle
initial and last name and year of service (month if known).
If a common name, may need their service number to identify
which individual you seek.

A search should list names, dates and rank of individuals
for you to select to view. Select one then Ancestrys
initial result should tell you the unit they were in at that
time. If you view the source document you may need to go
back several pages to the first page to find the name of the
unit listed. The muster rolls are mainly long lists of names.

Once you have the unit name you may want to look at the
Korean War Projects USMC Command Diaries--US Marine Corps
Command and Unit Reportsat:

http://www.koreanwar.org/html/usmc_korean_war_records.html

These give a day-to-day record of the units
activitiesbattalion level for infantry and most other
units. They usually briefly describe the activities of the
battalions companies, enumerate casualties and may have
after-action reports of specific battles. At the site,
select a battalion or unit then next select the year and
month to view. It may take a while to download the pages.

Another Korean War Project resource is the Marines In The
Korean War Commemorative Series:

http://www.koreanwar2.org/kwp2/usmckorea/Main.htm

These are on-line booklets describing the phases of the war
and some specialized activities. They provide a quick
overview of the USMCs participation in the Korean War and
give some idea of what life was like for a Marine who was
there at that time.

Hi my Grandfather was a Korean War Veteran. His name was
Jack Staten. I only know from my Grandmother that he served
in the Korean War and I know he survived. He died of Cancer
later on in November of 1997. As a kid growing up (born in
1984,) I was never allowed to ask him about his service and
my grandparents never spoke of my grandpa's time spent in
Korea. That's just how they were. My uncles and aunt (5
uncles, 1 aunt and then my mom was the youngest of their 7
children,) never talked openly to him or asked him about his
years of service either. When he died he was buried as a
proud veteran in Obetz, Ohio in Obetz Cemetery. My
Grandmother I'm sure has his belongings from back when he
was a soldier but she's never been one who is comfortable
with sharing or telling us grandchildren about what Grandpa
Staten did back then. She's turning 76 on May 29th and I'd
like to find some shred of my Grandfather's military
history/service online and maybe one picture or something so
I can print off my findings and give them to my Grandmother.
I want to know personally for myself, more details about my
Grandpa. I'm in need of any national search database
websites where I can search for him by first/last name and
maybe find more info. about him during those years or any
tips for searching you could offer me, anything would be
greatly appreciated.
Thanks & God Bless!
