I read The Last Stand of Fox Company during pandemic lockdown and I am re-reading
it now. I read extensively in my younger years on Vietnam and grew up with a great
appreciation for the sacrifices of those who served there but this was my first
real dive into the Korean War. The book mentions the experience of Charlie Company
(7th) on Turkey Hill and hints that perhaps their experience was even worse than
that of Fox. Unfortunately, I cannot find any real information on this and
wondering why there has been nothing published on this. Perhaps it goes back to
time when survivors kept their stories to themselves and now they are all gone or
maybe there simply weren't enough survivors to tell the story?

Every year no matter where in the world I am stationed I fly
home to drive my grandfather, for whom I am a name sake, in
the Veterans Day parade per his request. He was a Navy
Corpsman and never spoke about his time in the service until
my sister married a Marine and I myself ended up over seas
in the sandbox.

Today was the first time we had an additional passenger in
our vehicle for the parade and when they got to talking he
mentioned Turkey Hill and described it like yesterday which
he seems to do with his memories of Korea despite his
deteriorating health. I knew he was in the Chosin group but
I get a few more details every time someone gets him talking
about it.

First thank you for maintaining this website. I am looking for the helicopter pilot who flew my father off of Turkey Hill and to a land unit where he was treated and transfered to a hospital ship. The date was Nov. 28th 1950. Father Griffin, the chaplin with the C17 put the word out that this Marine Corporal needed to get out fast and now. Despite the fact that all flights were supposedly grounded, this pilot took his machine out and brought my dad back. He had head, belly and leg wounds. Had he not gotten out, he surely would have died. I understand that this pilot was likely from VMO-6. I can provide one piece of information that will clinch it that only the pilot, Ft Griffin and now my dad know. Please contact me if this story rings a bell with you or you are the pilot. My dad wants to talk and say thank you.
