I never met Trope; but was on a raid Nov. 7th, 1952 around OP2 (we were 3rd Bat. Recon.) and we lost one of our Marines. He was spotted wandering on the enemy hill later that morning. We were planning to return and attempt a rescue; but were told that Sgt. Thrope had already launced a volunteer squad from Item CO. and did suffer casualties. I did not witnees the actual rescue mission; but have no doubt to the accuracy of this account. Our platoon was wiped out on the raid; so we were quickly evacuated. Trope earned a well deserved reputation as a Combat Marine and I salute him.

I was in Plt 138, and Trope's platoon was in the same barracks. That guy was so mean that LOOK magazine came down there and did a feature article about him and boot camp in general. One night he came in from a drunken binge and threw me down the stairs while walking firewatch. Yeh, I sure remember him!
