Enlisted in Marine Corps February, 1951 and arrived at Parris Island on
Sunday, Feb. 23rd? with about a dozen other recruits from the northeast.
Owing to the Korean war the corps had been expanded, there now being 7
recruit training battalions; I was assigned to platoon 185, 7th Batt. in
tents adjacent to the parade ground and just opposite of the outdoor
theatre. 185 graduated May 9th and we received 10 days leave with orders to
return to PI at completion of leave. Returning to PI we awaited arrival of
remaining platoons from leave then boarded a train of nothing but Marines
all destined for advanced infantry training, camp Pendleton, calif.
Following advanced training, boarded APA 318 - about 2500 fellow Marines
destined for Korea; 16 days to Japan and overnight stop at sasebo to drop
off our seabags at warehouse then on to Sok-chori, Korea; boarded 6X and
headed north to 7th Marines arriving at midnight; pitched shelter-halfs on
hillside, rain/snow during the night and woke up drenched; during following
12 months served with Easy Co., Dog Company, H&S 7th Marines along East
Coast just north of 38th parallel - Soyang Valley area; March, 1952 lst Mar.
Div. was relocated to the west coast, north of Imjin River along 229
extending to the east and tie in with British Commonwealth at the time;
participated in outpost action along division front; during final months
assigned to H & S 7th Marines until rotated to the states, November, 1952
for processing at Treasure Island.
