The Korean Service Medal was awarded for duty in Korea. The one star signifies one specific time period that he served there. Fall/winter or spring/summer for a particular year.

The United Nations Medal was awarded by the U.N. but just the ribbon for service during the Korean War. The serviceman had to buy the medal if he wanted one.

The National Defense Medal was issued by the USA.

The Navy Occupation Medal was awarded for time spent in Japan following WWII to a point in 1951 or 1952.

I believe that as a surviving next of kin, you can apply for duplicate medals. I'm not sure of the address in St Louis you would write to, but the request would have tobe on Form 180. You would also have to send a COPY of his DD214. Not the original.

Based on your information provided, you can also apply for the Republic of Korea service Medal. How to do it is listed at this site.

You can also apply for the Navy Combat Action Ribbon. This is a ribbon only, no medal. Use Form 180 and DD214.
Send to: Chief of Naval Operations (no 9B 33), 2000Navy Pentagon, Washington, DC 20350-2000.

Form 180 can be found by entering that in a search engine.

You can find the ship's history by going to DANFS and clicking on cruisers.
