Right from San Diego Boot Camp in 1953 to SRU#1, Ship Repair Unit #1.
Worked as a Yeoman. Sent to Yeoman School in San Diego. Back to SRU#1 and
then later to SUB GROUP 2. Total of 20 months before being shipped to Guam.
Worked with Chief Moore, Chief Roberts, 1st Class Beavers, Frank Brawner,
Adkins and Munn. Spent a lot of time at the USO. Verna Hutnon(sp) was
Director. Others there, Dudley, Hill, Sue Sells, Tom... Went with the USO
on a trip to Mt. Hood for skiing.. Also did a lot of roller skating at the
Blu-C rink at nearby Warrenton at the old airbase Years later stopped at
the base while on a family vacation. Was allowed to drive around the base.
Then a Women's Job Corp Center. The USO now a Maritime Museum. Still in
contact with a friend at Seaside. If I remember right, there were LSTs,
LSMRs and ?? being put in mothballs. Also, the ship came in that Mr.
Roberts was filmed. As a Yeoman, I went along with Inspectors to keep
notes. Many of the ships were being sold to Italy and other countries. My
memory of names helped by snapshot pictures I had taken.

I still remember the downtown movie theater, Dairy Queen, the bus ride to
town and back to the base. And the rain!

Ken

I served at Tongue Point from March 1957 until Jan. 1958.
Does anyone have any photos of the base during that time?
Or close to it.

Was stationed aboard the PAC-Res-Fleet as a fireman, transferred
there, after the decommissioning of the USS Missouri BB-63 in
1955 and was there through 1956. Played on the base baseball
team, as short stop and pitched batting practice. Names are gone,
but a Warrant Officer was our coach. Jackie Robinson (Robby) was
our second baseman. He was a second class Stewart's Mate. It was
great, barn storming, around Portland and Eugene Oregon and the
State Prison Teams. From there I had orders to the USS Robin
MSCO-53 out of Charleston, South Carolina.

About '49 -51 I delivered the morning OREGONIAN to the
Base. I started up by the Gate, then did a few residences,
Captains Quarters, The Barracks, and the Sub-Groups. I
ended the route on APL (s) 23 and 26. I hit some Offices,
the sleeping Quarters and the Chow line. I usually had
Breakfast here before I returned home and then to school.
My Dad, Captain Charles Jackson was the Commandant of Sub-
Groups 3 and 4. We lived on the old Hospital Grounds for a
few months. Then, moved to Quarters "C" on the point.
I used a Utility Boat, the Hobby Shop. a Quonset Hut
Recreation shed, the Base Library, the Theater, and of
course the Bowling Alley and the GEDUNk STAND. I also work
for SHIPS SERVICE on the Laundry. and drove the Laundry
truck on pick-up and delivery in NAVY HEIGHTS and other
housing. GREAT TIMES.
SMOOTHE SAILING.
