I sailed on the O'Hara in October 1949 from Pier 91 to Yokohama. We were told that is was both; the smallest ship in the contract fleet, and the flag ship. For a troop transport, it was tiny, and bobbed like a cork.
We went some 500 miles out of the way to avoid the main body of Typhoon Gloria, which did extensive damage to Shanghai, Hong Kong, Okinawa, and Japan.

i am looking for info about the U.S.N.S. O'Hara. when my father arrived at camp stoneman he was transported to alaska aboard the above ship. i have checked the D.O.D. listing of both active and inactive naval vessals and find no listing of it by name. he still has his orders showing that this was the name of the ship. this was around nov. or dec. of 1952. he was in the air force. any information you can provide would be appreciated. please e-mail back at either my e-mail address above or at his e-mail address which is davidecozart@aol.com
