Boot camp May, 1951. No time to be home sick. They worked us
to near death. Assigned to USS Kula Gulf (CVE-108) spent four
years aboard as Rd2 CIC. Brought her to Boston in May 1955 for
moth ball fleet. Discharged same week. The Kulamarue was a
great ship to serve on. Super crew. Never regretted a minute.
Home port was Norfolk, Va. Ninty percent of the time at sea.
ASW was our main assignment, towards the end we were involved
with quick response, helicopters and Marines. That all
transpired 65 years ago. We ceased our reunions, which were
great times, due to lack of attendance. Ship served in three
wars, WWII, Korea and out of moth balsl for Vietnam. here' too
the memories. Anchors Away.

Went to Bainbridge in September 1951, followed by Airman
Prep school at NAS Jacksonville, Florida. Assigned to NAS
Miramar, outside San Diego--photo squadron VC-61.
Assigned to camera repair duty, sent to Pensacola twice
for advanced training in camera repair, then shipped out
on the USS Kearsarge with a detachment of VC-61--stops
made in Hawaii, the Philippines, Japan, Hong Kong,
Singapore--and Hawaii again, enroute home. Discharged
after my 4-year enlistment, in September 1955. All told,
it was a life-changing experience, and I would not give
back one minute of those 4 years. Left as a PH-2 (or AF-
2), on the brink of promotion to first class. L. O'Brien

Was wondering if anyone on here knew John "Jack" Hermann, he
was in Maryland I think during the 1955 time frame. He
received the lame duck ring for the Korean conflict. He is
my father and I am trying to find any information I can on
him. He passed 1969 when I was only 2 yrs old. Any photos
or memories you have of him would be greatly appreciated.

On a Sunday evening drinking beer in Sal's bar and grill in
Brooklyn, four of us who were 1A and had no feeling for
going into the Army decided to enlist in the Navy. Monday
morning the four of us went to someplace in NYC, by the end
of June three of us were sailors, the fourth didn't enlist
cause his mother wouldn't let him.I went on to ET school in
Great Lakes then assigned to the USS Chester T. O'Brien
DE421 where I spent a good part of three years. Discharged
in Key West ,Fla June 1956.I regret not keeping any of my
uniforms, especially the flat hat.Four years were enough,
but what great memories, so proud I served.

I was so anxious for a new adventure after watching movies
like Sailor Beware with Martin and Lewis and Frogmen both from
the early 50s. So finally convinced my mother to sign me in.
I was only 17. Quit H.S. at Farmingdale, NY. Sworn in at 50
Lafayette St, NY, NY and off to Bainbridge, MD 20 MAR 1952.
Was in the 4th Regiment, 41st Battalion, Company 255. Our
company commander was BMC - Chief Boatswain Mate Fireball
Menard. Only about 5ft 6in, but an intimidating guy. Served 4
yrs doing only shore duty. Lucked out. Jacksonville NAS FL,
Argentia,NS Newfoundland and Quonset Point, RI NAS. If I had
to do over again, I probably wouldn't.

Attended boot camp from January-March, 1957 (Co. 10)
Returned to Hospital corps School the same year. My first
duty station was NNMC, Bethesda. Can still remember
standing clothesline watches in the snow at Bainbridge.
Developed measles, but was able to conceal it so as not to
get "set back" to another company. Retired in 1976 aboard
the USS Trippe (FF-1075) as HMC.

Company 294 in 1st Regiment - among others - four months in boot with two trips to the hospital and three different companies. Transfered to Little Creek, Norfolk, Virginia Personnel Office in August 1952 completed my Navy career in December 1953. Looking at the company 294 picture. Suprised at how many faces I remember. Wish we could be together again - even to march a little - stay in step now.

Reading everything here brings back my boot camp days when I had a 28 inch waist. I was in Bainbridge in 54 and was in company 330 in the mighty third regiment. We lost the E flag a few times and it was rough. My first night in the reception Barrocks was a nightmare. Some guys were crying they wanted to go home. My folks came to visit me and I had to keep one foot on the grinder not two in the car. After Boot camp I went to N.A.T.T.C Memphis which was a student base on one side and NAS on the other. I got discharged in 56. I still have me graduation book from Boot camp.
