Comments:

I was aboard USS Newport when it was re commissioned in
Japan on August 27 1950. I left the ship in January 1951
after we returned to Yokosuka,Japan from a short stay in
Hong Kong, China for my last assignment aboard USS Saint
Paul CA 73.
I would love hearing from anyone.
I was 19 back then...now 83 and counting.
My health is good for my age.
I went to college after discharge and received three
degrees...my last was a Ed.D. I was an educator for 30 years.

Comments:

I am looking for anyone who served on USS Newport and knows details to what happend to the USS NEWPORT.

My father in law, Ervin Van Buren, said he served on the USS Newport.

He said he was on board when the Newport when it was damaged from a mine. He was in a Oakland, Ca. hospital and was medically discharged.

Ervin is alive, he is 78 years old, and is in fair health.
He lives in Norfolk, Nebraska. He was from Oneil, Nebraska when he entered the Navy.

Ervin said he did not receive a Purple Heart for his injuries.

Can you lend us any information about the USS Newport?
