i served in Camp Casey Korea from June 1969 to August 30 1970. I was the S4 driver
7th ID. I drove the S4 to all 7th ID units on the DMZ at least once a month
sometimes more depending on enemy activity there. Had to take weapons ammo flak
jackets steel pot . The route to the DMZ was close but very primitive, Dirt roads
surrounded by trees and vegetation that made good enemy concealment. Had numerous
red alerts due to enemy massing on the DMZ. Spent many days in deployed to
designated combat zones in case of enemy attack. Several attempts to kill South
Korean President Park Chung He by North Korean Infiltrators.

Point of information...The KDSM is authorized for continuous service of 30
days or more in Korea from the period of 7-27-54 until to be determined. The
KSM is for service b4 7-27-54. Hope this helps. You can contact your branch of
service for the medal or you can purchase the authorised medal on Google for
approx $12.00.

I went from a very warm location to a very cold Korea. It was January, 1968
and was told I was posted along the DMZ. Wow, never felt so cold. I have
no idea how the Korean War combat troops fought in that weather. I really
have the utmost respect for those special warriors.

Anyone having served in Korea since the armistice is
eligibile for the KDSM. You have to fill out the medals and
decorations request form. If you served between 66 and 74

Update on original 2004 posting about KDSM:

The secretary of defense approved the implementing
instructions and criteria for the KDSM on 3 Feb 2004. The
Korea Defense Service Medal (KDSM) is authorized to members
of the armed forces who have served on active duty in
support of the defense of the republic of Korea from 28
July 1954 to a date to be determined, Note: Your service in
Korea had to start on or after 28 July, 1954, not before
that date as that is KSM time! The area of eligibility
encompasses all land area of the republic of Korea, and the
contiguous water out to 12 nautical miles, and all air
spaces above the land and water areas. Effective 3 Feb
2004, the Overseas Service Ribbon (OSR) is no longer
authorized for overseas tours in the republic of Korea.
Service members must have been assigned, attached, or
mobilized to units operating in the area of eligibility for
30 consecutive or for 60 nonconsecutive days, or have been
in combat, wounded in the line of duty, a member of an
aircrew flying within the area of eligibility. Only one
award of the KDSM is authorized for any individual. In
order of precedence the KDSM will be worn below the Global
War On Terrorism Service Medal (GWOTSM) and above the Armed
Forces Service Medal (AFSM).
