While stationed with the 2nd Bn 17th Field Arty, 2D infantry Division- I was serving with the Katusa's on the DMZ the winter of 1976 we encountered a North Korean Unit and was in a fire fight at night and couldn't see where we were running to and fell off a cliff into a revine , the North Koreans fired down at us and I was un-conscious an unknown amount of time, when I came to I couldn't move and most everyone with me were dead as far as I knew. There was Snow on the ground and it was freezing out, I pulled a body over mine to help cover me because everytime a North Korean Patrol would come by they would shoot into the bodies to make sure they were dead. I must have Laid there two or three days before our unit found us and med-a-vaced me out to Seoulwith double pneumonia, town ligaments in my leg and ankle and hip injury, as far as I know I was the only survivor, I never knew what happened to the rest of the men. Back then I was told to forget everything It never happened during de-briefing.

I was with Co "C" 76th Engrs. We went north to the DMZ in '67 from our Camp Eiler ouside of Kimpo. Our assigment was to first build a base camp for ourselves from which to go into the DMZ and Panmunjom to work on the roads and bridges that needed rebuilding and repairing. We stayed at JSA for the 1st month while we built our own camp. We were the "Liberty Bell Battalion" so when the camp was finished it was named Camp Liberty Bell. It was just south of JSA and the DMZ. We had no knowleged of the war still going on up there. We were so naive that once when one of our bulldozers broke down in the DMZ we were sent up in pairs to guard it with our M-14s and one clip apiece holding 13 and 15 rounds respectively. The Dozer had broken down on the road just below the OP that was between the JSA and Panmunjom. On my guard watch the OP was hit by NKs and a firefight began. Next day we found out that no one had notified the OP that we were going to be there. We took fire from both sides and only crawling under the Dozer saved our butts. Events like this happended with some regularity. However the worst was on 28 August '67. Our camp was hit at evening chow just as we had lined up to eat and the men were coming in from work. They started at the back of the chow line and walked their fire down the line and into the mess hall. At the same time some of them walked their AKs down the tent line and into the motor pool. By the time that we got to the armsroom (our weapons were still locked up) and our rifles and were able to put fire on them we had 4 KIA and 27 WIA. I have the only newspaper accounts published that I know of as it was hushed up by the powers that be. They are from Stars and stripes. I know that Readers Digest also had an article around that time about the attack but I have been unable to get a copy of it. We had other incidents but this was by far the worst. If you want copies of the articles or any other info I can give you please contact me.
