I was at camp LB from 10/71 to 12/72 RTO second platoon it pretty much sucked.
However I really enjoyed deer hunting with a 50 cal from a 113 on range day when
that little sucker ran across our target area all 4 apc's opened up, of course I
was the first to hit it, anyway we shot all our ammo in less than minute LOL.
None of us heard the cease fire order. That my story and I'm sticking 2it. Then
there was the day we
met that convoy of nukes while riding around in our 113's and some full bird got
all preturbed cause I took a couple of pitcher's
I didn't appreciate him taking my camera and exposing the whole roll but wtf he
ordered me/ all of us to never say a word well it's to late now. I done let the
cat out of the bag.
Unlike Randy I still ain't growed up. I got my self a touch throat cancer
washing those 113's in an abandoned asbestos pit probably didn't help or it
could have been those OJ:s . Life is still good I a PaPa now my Vette is going
to Jase grandson extrodnair. One of these days.

SSG Gonzales,

I supported the 1st Radio Bn from Kaneohe, Hawaii in January of 1981, along
with my friend Bill 4sh, as Army NCOs on TDY from Ft. Ord. It was freezing
cold, but at least our guard shack had heat. The ROKs up the street had to
stand guard duty under concrete umbrellas, with waist-high sandbags as their
only protection from the elements. We passed them when we went to Camp
Liberty Bell every few days for showers, and we threw pre-made snowballs at
them from the back of our truck. They waited for us and did the same thing
to us on the way back! Good times, great memories.

I was at Camp Liberty Bell in July 71-SEPT 72. Served on
GP Collier a few times made couple trips inside the DMZ
looking for infiltrators. As a veteran I feel we should
receive Cib, I witnessed firefights several nights, as
that was when NK liked to screw with us, and at the GP
they came right up to our wire lots of times. I don't
know when the spraying of agent orange happened but I
have terrible joint and muscle pain from inflammation and
I have been disabled since 2000. Just wondered if anyone

Comments:

I was at, (hell I helped BUILD), Camp Liberty Bell in 1967.
When we got there it was an empty field with a water tower.
We had to stay at the JSA compound while we set up our tents
and got the camp ready for the rest of the Company to come
up from our base camp.We were Co "C" 76th Engineer
Battalion. Our nickname was the "Liberty Bell" battalion (76
get it?)and that's how the camp got its name.We spent the
first month or so building the camp, pouring the pads for
the hootches, setting up the water point, the rock crusher
at the quarry and the Motor pool. We were already going up
into the JSA to begin work on the roads going up to
Panmunjom and doing some work in the meeting area. All the
while not knowing that we had been plunked down in the
middle of a war zone. Our first inkling came early when one
of our 'dozers broke down in the Z on the road right under
the OP on the way up to Panmunjom. We were told that we had
to provide guard duty to protect the dozer "from slicky
boys" That night the NKs hit the outpost and we started
taking fire from both sides because nobody had told the
outpost that we were there. We took fire about every 2 weeks
or so. But the worst happened on August 28th 1967 when about
20 NKs opened automatic weapons fire from the surrounding
hills above the Rock quarry into our camp. It was 5PM, chow
time and the chow line was hit as was the motor pool. They
then walked their fire down the tent line and back up again
into the Mess Hall. By the time we were able to get to our
weapons, locked in the arms room which we had to break open,
3000 thousand rounds had been fired into our camp and we had
4 KIA and 28 WIA out of an understrength company of 87 men.
Sp/4 Michael Vogel was killed running from the motor pool
and PFC Curtis Rivers later died of wounds received in the
Mess hall where he was a cook. 2 Katusas, including the
Katusa Sgt Major, were also KIA. There was no acknowledgment
of this sacrifice by these men. Not even the Company
yearbook for that year acknowledges they were part of the
company, let alone that they had died serving with it. I
wanted to put this on here so that those of you who have
served at Liberty Bell would know that the ground you walked
on and the place you served at was bought at a pretty high
price and so the Names Mike Vogel and Curtis Rivers would be
remembered as well as those others who bled at Liberty Bell.

I was stationed at Camp Liberty Bell Apr,84-Apr,85. I was with heavy mortars we had the hootch just past the orderly room on the right. Does anyone know where Kitty Hawk was? I've been reading some things that sound like there calling Liberty Bell Kitty Hawk! I remember going through the front gate and seeing a big banner that said 'Camp Liberty Bell', we even had to cover it up once when some North Korean big wigs went through on their way to Souel for some meetings. Remember we didnt exist. I was there when the Russian came through the JSA and all hell broke loose. Remember when someone hung the American flag upside down at Liberty Bell? I still have dreams of that damn alert siren, the speakers and some other shit I saw whenever we were told to 'lock and load 1 30 round magazine and sit on the sand bags in the back of the deuce and a half'if you were there you know what I mean. And what was that stuff the deuce and a half would spray when it would drive down the middle of Liberty Bell? Had a weird chemical smell and made it hard to breathe afterwards. I mention these things so that my brothers who were there with me can remember them too,Im proud to have served there but wish I never would have went,The VA says were lairs when we tell them what happened and why we need help. F**k them,I drank the fire, did my patrols and stood the line when everyone down south got short times and V.D.we need to push for what we deserve,we left the DMZ but it never left us. God Bless you and 'Keep Up the Fire. Stay in touch Brothers.

I was at site 4 too, in 1974 - Have i mailed you before? I've got alot of pictures of the hill - It was being re-landscaped into something different when i left there in jun'74. They were moving the perimeter fence to the other side of the hill. I wish i knew what it looked like a year later. (see CAMPLB14.JPG in that directory link)
Most of the picture files in this directory are of site 4 and Liberty Bell.
