Mike, You are right about the US occupation of Korea for several years after the end of World War II, I guess because Korea had been occupied by Japan prior to and during WWII. I have a friend, Ken Wheeler, who was captured by the Japanese at Bataan and was a POW. He was sent to Korea as a prisoner of the Japanese. Ms. Russo, I apologize. David Benbow

Dave,

The US did occupy South Korea from the end of World War II in 1945 until 15 August 1948 when the Republic of Korea was established. LTG John R. Hodge, commander of the US XXIV Corps, appointed Major General Archibald V. Arnold, USA, to be the first Military Governor of South Korea on 12 September 1945. MG Arnold was also the commanding general of the 7th (US) Infantry Division. The Army kept a regimental combat team from the 7th Inf Div in South Korea after the end of the occupation until June 1949. LTG Hodge's staff published a pretty good two volume history of this little known chapter of US history entitled, "History of the Occupation of Korea."

I'm not sure if this is the occupation that Ms. Russo is referring to.

The United States did not "occupy" South Korea. The US and the Republic of Korea are strong allies. The US has supplied troops since the Korean war. The South Koreans reciprocated and provided a significant number of combat troops to help the US in the Vietnam War. The Korean people have built a strong economic power in less than 50 years, rising from the ashes of the war. Compare South Korea and North Korea and you will come to the conclusion that with a little help from the US and good old capitalism and due to a lot of brains and hard work from the Korean people, South Korea is an outstanding example of a free market system working with a government of the people, resulting in prosperity and security for all her citizens.
