I served in A Company, 31st Infantry and our base was Camp
Casey.I served on the DMZ in 1968. We were awarded the
Bayonet Badge and the Imjin Scout pin. It was hard reality
up there on the Z, especially in winter. I have been trying
to contact some of my buddies but so far no luck. If anyone
has any ideas let me know. My email address is

I served in the Korean DMZ from Feb 1968 to June 1969. I served with Company C 3/23rd Infantry, 2nd Infantry Division. I went to Korea after the North Koreans captured a US Navy ship, "the Pueblo". You can get lots of info about the Ship. They even have a web site. The crew was kept prisoner for 10 months (one was killed in the capture). I used to hear the captured crew on North Korean loudspeakers in the DMZ at night. The North Koreans played march music on 10 foot tall speakers plus propaganda off and on during the night. We would be setting ambushes in the DMZ to try and stop infiltrators who came from North Korea to South Korea, thinking that the South Korean people would rise up and overthrow the existing government of South Korea and Kick out the 50,000 American troops stationed there , thereby uniting Korea, which was divided at the end of WWII. I recommend several articles: Go to the VFW Magazine website, (Feb 2000 issue) for a story about the use of agent orange in the DMZ in 1968. My picture is in that story. A friend of mine, William Holinger, wrote an award winning novel about his experiences in the DMZ during 1968. It's called "The Fencewalker". Bill has taught creative writing at Univ of Michigan and Harvard. You can get this book through your inter-library loan system. You can also get info from www.theforgottenvictory.org I have formed a DMZ vets organization with about 350 members. We've had several reunions in the 1990's. I returned to Korea in 1998 and got to go back to the DMZ again. It was weird. When I went to Korea I was 23 and had graduated from UNC. After I got out of the Army I went to law school at the Univ of North Carolina and I practice law in Statesville, NC. I have 5 children. One is 25 and is a campus minister at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. I have 4 daughters who are in the 9th, 7th, 6th, and 3rd grades. My wife is a homemaker. If you have questions you may e-mail, call (704-871-9000), fax (704-873-0570) or write PO BOX 432 Statesville, NC 28687-0432.
