I served with Company A, 1/38th 2nd Div. Our company manned a guard post 75 meters
from the MDL. This post was the one where 5 infiltrators were KIA by US troops.
This happened one day after I was on duty. Also A Jeep hit a mine and one GI was
KIA. I have pics of that Jeep. After 7 months I transferred to HHC 1/38th S-4
section. I was promoted to Sgt in that unit.

I was stationed at Camp Casey with the 7th ID from June 1969 to Aug 30 1970. I
drove the S-4 officer to all 7th Id units on the DMZ at least once each month
sometimes more. Had to carry loaded weapons steel pot and flak jacket. had to
observe all DMZ rules.Depending on the activities at the DMZ may stay one day or
several. The route from Camp Casey to the DMZ alfhough very close was dirt roads
with very few markers to assure we were going correctly. This caused us to get
lost on one trip and deal with Korean nationals even though we werent sure if they
were north or south Koreans. We were on red alert several times due to
infiltrators trying to kill South Korean president Park Chung He.

I was in D co, 1/31st, and yes, we were on the DMZ from July-Sept 1984.

I have an Imjin Scout certificate showing DMZ service from 16 Aug 84 to 20

I also have an Army Achievement Medal citation that states I was a sniper at
Guard Post Oulette from 15 July to 23 Sept 1984.

would help your claim that 1/31st was there.

During 74-early 76, I spent many vacations at 4P1, We were
on alert, so much we were going bonkers then in the Spring
of 75, We got a "Fire mission" from the joint US and Korean
DMZ foot soldiers. We fired a total of 8 Rounds, two were
Illuminations. two willie petes and 4 HEs in a matter of
what 3-5 minutes? Then a Check fire. Our 102s were facing
North, yet due to tube elevations the impact area was a few
miles away. We cleared our guns, and slept around them till
Breakfast. We never asked, I was Base piece section Chief
and Gunner. Yes was antsy and the action was fishy. A week
later I was sent to our forward OP on the "Z" from this
spot, it wasn't hard to see the spots we hit, the fence was
getting fixed.. The feelings were on high nervousness of all
the Soldier and KTUSAs ..

WELCOME BROTHERS , i served in Korea from Jan 1967 - Feb
1968 being assigned to Company B 2nd Eng (combat ) Bn, 2nd
Inf Div. our camp was across the road from Camp McGovern RC
#2 being made up of 1/9th Inf Reg & 1/23 Inf ,2nd Inf
Div.Being located at the village of Nopae Dong being located
just south of the imjin river. Out of my 13 month tour in
Korea my Company spent from March of 1967 through Dec of
1967 performing operations ON the South tape of the DMZ (
erecting a barrier fence )helping with guard towers ,
clearing mine fields while having one man in my platoon step
on a mine and loose his foot.We pulled our own security out
front while others worked. We were ambushed in June of 1967
( 1st & 2nd Plts ) by north koreans lobbing hand grenades in
on us followed by small automatic weapons fire. Again in Aug
of 1967 our plt was again ambushed by several north koreans
with grenades and small automatic weapons fire.On several
nights members of my platoon would be assigned to stay
behind to pull guard duty over deadlined equipment, no
sleeping bags. sometimesin fox holes, others in old
bunkers.those knife cutting artic winds blowing down from
sybira at night. The ungodly summer humid heat ( well over
100deg) so often. those never eascaping dry dusty blowing
road we traveled daily. Please let me say that I AM PROUD
of my service to my country with no regrets. I am outraged
that our very own government, congress, pentagon, DOD has
swept all GI'S who served in Korea and sacrificed their
lives and livelyhood being wounded and sent home to suffer
from a long list of diseases ( cancers ) only to be told
there's no record of us ever being there or doing that. WE
MUST NEVER allow those puppets in Washington to defeat us in
denying a very so real chapter in our lives. The answer ??
BOOTS ON GROUND for anybody serving north of the imjin river
and even some below the river !! GOD BLESS YOU MY BROTHERS

I served as an armored intelligence specialist in HQ and Hq
Co., 2nd Sqdn,10th US Calvary, at Camp Kaiser, Korea from
Dec 1960 until the end of March 1962. I worked directly for
Col.Thomas Q. Donaldson, IV., commanding officer of the 10th
Calvary. T.Q. was from a long line of distinguished military
officers going back to the Civil war. I believe that he was
one of the finest military officers ever to serve in the US
Army. He died from injuries received in a traffic accident
in Pennsylvania, I believe in the 1980's. During our time
there he had a brother who was also a Colonel serving in
another unit.
Korea was a frigid hellhole and I served, or more correctly,
suffered through two winters there. I believe that those of
us serving along the DMZ probably had it much worse than
those in the south of Korea. Never received any medal or
acknowledgement of any kind. Didn't expect a lot of praise
for only doing the same job as thousands of other soldiers
but a letter of thanks would be nice. I recently applied for
copies of my military records, and,, like so many other DMZ
soldiers, i have found that there is very little in my army
records to prove I served there. The only proof is a set of
my orders returning me to the States at the end of my tour,
Camp Kaiser was a frozen wasteland in the winter, a muddy
bog in monsoon season, and a hot miserable dust bowl in the
summer. I am proud to have been there, proud to have served
with so many wonderful people, and damn proud to be able to
say that I wore the yellow scarf and patch of a US Cavalryman.

spent time north of the river should have received more
recognition than they have. But time will tell if this
ever happens. I applaud those who are taking the time to
try and rectify some of the oversights that have been made
my DOD in this regard and wish you good luck with your
endeavors. Maybe someday we will be treated better. I
really feel like those from about 1965-1975 were forgotten.

I have to agree with many of these comments as I was with
the 2d squad 3d platoon, A Co. 1st/17th (M) inf. 7th inf.
div. at Camp Kaiser from Jan 1965 to sometime in 1966. I
went on many patrols, set up lpop's and was all over this
country. Many things happened but few were recorded.
Reason, who knows but when an Infantry Line Company has
only a total of about 50-60 men a lot of things didn't get
done or reported. I know that I wrote my mother always
wanting to know what was in the paper and only once did she
say the paper mentioned Korea. I'm waiting on my OMPF to
see if I can document my service as my DD 214 appears to
have been scrubbed clean. But i feel that when you never
knew when someone may take a shot at you and that as
someone else said we were expendable then yes I think we
deserve more recognition, Not all of us went to the Scout
school but logged many hours on Patrol we were all in
danger 24/7/365 it just amazes me how a magic date appears
as the start of a time line. What idiot makes these
decisions he surely wasn't on the ground with his butt on
the line, I by no means want to discredit my brothers who
have been fortunate to have been recognized and given
something for what they did but feel there are many more
just as deserving although un-named for whatever reason. I
could go on an on, but the comments of others are just as
important as we were all acting on behalf of our country
and for the Korean People.

Any US Military personnel who were assigned to DMZ areas, worked there,
drove there, walked its land area, went there day or night, deserves
recognition by our government.
Recorded, "OFFICIAL" incidentses, as they like to refer to them as, can be
multiplied by a factor of ten, and more likely 20, that were swept under the
table and NEVER recorded.
I had my own "didn't happen incident", in August of 70'. Ran into six NK
infiltrators in a valley on the way to the 4th/7th Cav on Motor Messenger
duties. NK's were armed with AK's and Russian PPSK SMG, me and my
driver had two 1911 45's, with 21 rounds total. No contest! Nk's were later
killed by ROKS' S on patrol in the area. Only two miles from Camp Gary
Owen. Never Reported!
Fire-fights, encounters, shootings, and infiltrations, occured all the way
south to the Uijongbu area, at Camp Red Cloud and Camp Pilillau. NONE
WERE EVER REPORTED!
Any where in Area-1, at anytime, in any place, at any moment, of any given
day, you risked being shot at, ambushed, or killed! THAT'S THE FULL TRUTH!

I served from Jan 1967 - Feb 1968 in the ROK with Co. B 2nd

approx 2 miles below the Imjin River on the South Slope of
the " EASY QUEEN MOUNTIAN " across from RC#2 ( Camp McGovern
)1/9th Inf ,2nd Inf Div.Village of Nopae Dong !! My first
experience on the DMZ was in March of 1967. Once my Company
(Co. B ) started working on and along the DMZ we never
really stopped operating up there until sometime in Nov or
Dec of 1967.We were Ambushed by hand grenades and small
automatic arms fire twice during the summer of 67 while
erecting the Barrier Fence. We cleared and blew up Land
Mine's along the DMZ. We helped erect ( OP ) guard towers .
We spent 4-5 nights posted along the DMZ to guard equipment
disabled. What i'm saying is reguardless of the unit,
reguardless of rather or not the unit was stationed above
the River, ALL UNITS that sent GI;S to serve north of the
Imjin River and along the DMZ. Whoever withen VA & the DOD
that buckled under and excepted this thin time line of (
presumptive duty dates ) should be sent packing. It's a sad
day in Washington DC ( DOD ) & VA when they turn their

All those who served within the DMZ should be recognized no
matter the MOS as long as they performed their duties while
wearing the uniform of a United States Military Organization -

When you say "on the DMZ" are you talking about North of
the river, Area 1, Camp Howze and North, Camp Casey and
North, Infantry only??? Please define. This is one of those
things were the dividing line can divide.

FYI there are also a couple bills in this area on the
kwva's website for similar recognition but it is for all
those that were in country, not just North of the river.

Thanks, Dave;

DMZ Vets did get the KDVM award after a long struggle. More
recognition for those who served during a very stressful
time is well past due.

David Apperson, Vets Helping Vets and Ted Barker, The Korean
War Project.

I am working on a project and thought Ted Barker and the
"Korean War Project" members should get some honor and
recognition for this legislative bill.

We are working on getting federal legislation passed through
congress and voted on the house floor by 4 July 2013 which
will honor those who served on the DMZ with a certificate, a
medal and possibly even a challenge coin.

Award will be based on budget as determined and approved by
the United States House of Representatives.

We would like to hear from Veterans who served on the DMZ
for two-weeks or more from the date of the cease-fire till
the last American came off the line of demarcation.

Please help by submitting a short statement (under 100
characters) why you believe you deserve recognition and/or
what you felt or saw on your government designated "Hardship
Tour" as being a DMZ Army Soldier, Marine, the Navy
Corpsman, and possibly some Air Force employees.

HOW TO HELP

1. Send your message via the Korean War Project system so
all who send statements will be recognized in the future for
there part in supporting this designation and congressional
approved legislative tribute and bill.

2. If desired, please leave a nice comment to nine term
Congressman Pete Sessions from the state of Texas and
supported by the Texas Rangers and Southwest Airlines for
Veterans to visit Washington DC and I (David Apperson) was
very humbled to be an honoree and yoy can view my photo with
Congressman Sessions @ https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?
