Bill Holinger wrote The Fence-walker, a novel based on Bill's experiences in Korea in '68 and '69 as a battalion S-3 officer for 1/31st Infantry, 7th Div. The book won awards. Bill teaches creative writing at Harvard. Bill Roskey wrote Muffled Shots,A Year on the DMZ. It was published by Dell and is hard to find because it's out of print. It's an outstanding book by a DMZ vet of 1966. Holinger's book can be found at Amazon.com and through your interlibrary loan system, if your local library doesn't have it. Dan Bolger, an active duty infantry officer has written a number of books about the infantry, including several novels. He wrote the best source about Korea in the late 1960's, entitled: Scenes from an Unfinished War: Low Intensity Conflict in Korea, 1966-1969. It's available from the Combat Studies Institute, US Army Command and General Staff College, Ft. Levenworth, Kansas 66027-6900. It may be free if you tell them you are a DMZ vet. Dan just left his 2nd tour in Korea, this time as a brigade commander with the 2nd Division up along the Imjin River. John Antal has written a novel,Proud Legions, about the North Koreans invading the South in present time (something we thought about the whole time we were there) Since Antal was an armor officer ( he was the commander of the 2/72nd armor in Korea in the 90's), his book is most interesting. He and Bolger are friends. I have a half dozen poems published in various books, including my poem, The Flak Jacket, which won the Southern Prize for literature in 1995. It tells of a middle-aged man finding his old flak jacket in a footlocker 30 years after returning from Korea and finding some dirt of Korea in one of the pockets, resulting in a lot of memories of his service in the DMZ in '68 and '69. If you know of other books, put them on this site. David Benbow
