I was attached to the Installation Service Detachment (ISD PX COMPOUND) from late
1968 thru early 1971. My job was slot machine repair and collection of money from
the machines. Most of my time was spent at Division Artillery at or near the DMZ.
I would spend 2 days a week driving to the NCO clubs to repair machines and
collect money and spend one or 2 nights sleeping in a NCO club and the return back
to Camp Casey with the money and reports. I FORGOT the name of the Artillery
units, camp names, and villages near the units. Can someone please help me?

My husband was stationed at camp Kaiser and I lived in Unchon for a time 1968-69.
officers had curfew, so I spent a fair amont of time on base, photo lab, club.
Travel was complicated, but got around hitching rides in jeeps and riding buses,
both military and korean ones. Shot at once, going the back way to Seoul. Living
amoung the Ainu (indigenous of the area) made me want to stay there...without
electricity, communal property, farm-to-table meat and produce, simple living.
Although I heard from a professor of Korean language at Smith college that it is
not like that anymore.

Arrived in Korea Jan. 1967. I was assigned to C company 2/17 Inf at Camp
Kaiser. I was in weapons ply. On a 106 recoiless rifle crew. I was supposed
to leave Feb. 1968 but the Pueblo was captured and I extended for 6 months.
They reassigned all the weapons plt. To HHC and after we got settled they
sent some of us TDY to the 2nd Division on the DMZ as a Quick Reaction Force
in response to the many infiltration into South Korea by North Korean
Terrorist. We were responsible for the area between the South Korean guard
post along the DMZ patrolling. I left Korea July 1968 and I went to
Schweinfurt Germany to the 2nd 30 Inf Battalion. I’ve always wanted to go
back to Korea but just never got the chance. GOD BLESS the UNITED STATES of
AMERICA. Proud to have served! SGT. Randall C. Carroll

My father was at Camp Kaiser thinking 69 till closing. His name was Noel
Pecunia, I believe he was a Major or LtCol. I was like in 7th grade so I
don't know much about his time there. He passed away around 13 years ago.
I wish I could go back in time and ask him about some of his tours away from
the family. Things and places I know or remember: He was drafted for WW II,
believe he was sent to Africa then Italy (not sure), he was sent to Korea in
the early 50's. Don't know much in between there and Ft. Rucker. I was born
at Ft. Rucker, Alabama 57, lived in Munich 60-63, 2 tours at Ft. Bragg, with
Vietnam (65) in between. Ft. Clayton, Panama Canal Zone, then Camp Kaiser.
He then was shipped to Ft. Gordon, Ga. where he retired in 72. We lived in
Aguadilla, Puerto Rico his home town. He passed shortly after his 80th
Birthday. Hope to find out more from his career. Thanks in advance for any
info. Happy Veteran's Day. Sincerely: David Pecunia

Arrived in SK Dec 1968 fresh out of Inf OCS and was assigned to Camp
Kaiser as a platoon leader. Reassigned to Ft Benning in Jan 1970. Think I
was in co B under Cpt Mark White. Later served as S-3 Air under Cpt/Major
Ed Zurowski then S-3 once he rotated home. Spent 6-7 months living in
tents and getting holes dug for bunkers just below the DMX then covering
the bunkers up. Watched lots of rice paddies being worked that summer.
My inexperienced butt was saved many times by a great platoon sgt named
Poteet. Wherever you are Sgt Poteet, thanks for everything. Had some
great guys as fellow platoon leaders - John Jean and Jurwood Moxley. My
memory is still kind of foggy due to all the cheap drinks at the club and
drinking something called mockley when the field. Lots of cool people in
Kaiser. Wish I could remember all the names, especially the young guy
who was my driver for a few months. Nobody could handle a Jeep like that
guy.

Smith... a soldiers soldier if there ever was one - South
Carolina). Each soldier saluted and "reported for
pay"....I counted out the MPC (Script/monopoly money),
then the soldier counted it out.... and signed for
it...and the line moved on. It took about 3-4 hours.
I was learning. The rule was that a soldier gets paid on
payday. I got that. Good rule. Fair rule. Just rule.
About 20 soldiers were not paid because they were not
there. Some were in jail in Seoul, some SD (Special
Duty) in the club system of the Division and one SFC was
on the 1st Cav Rifle Team .... you guessed it...Camp
Kaiser.

I had no idea where these places were. But I got a 1:100
map and plotted them all then took off in the jeep
(fortunately it was one of the early M-151's and it had
cover).
I got the club guy....I think at Division and then a few
more and headed for the cage. That was not the hassle I
expected and we headed for uijonbu as we had a couple of
guys SD to the TrainFire Range between Casey and Hovey. I
got to them about supper time. Back on the MSR..about
heading for Kaiser.
Got thru Chinese Tunnel.... then found the road up toward
Kaiser. When I went thru the gate guard I asked where
the rifle team was....and they were on the edge in Large
GPs. I think there were three tents...It was about
1am..so I had to wake up someone in each tent before I
got to the right bed... I knelt down as I counted the
money...the SFC counted it ....said thank you ..Good
Night..I took off.

After you come back thru Chinese tunnel you get on a long
pretty straight road that parallels the Imjin on the
south side....there is nothing on that road...It was all
ROK camps.maybe the Turk camp was there as well (no
guards...no fence the Turks had caught a slicky boy and
beheaded him and hung the head on a rifle rod at the main
gate)..I ran into --almost ran over...a ROK soldier in
the middle of the road....he was trying to challenge a
jeep going at least 30. I think we scared each other. I
just said GI GI...OK OK...he was in a fog so that helped.

I got back to camp at Munsani about 4:30 Am... I still
had turn ins but got some sack. It was an
adventure....and my only trip to Kaiser ever.

O yes since I paid off the "top of the stack"...I was
short $300 which I paid w/my own money. I didn't tell
anybody....because it was dumb and stupid. Anyway about
a week later one of our senior 1st Lts (probably 7-8
years in grade) grabbed me in the coat room of the club
and gave me a small brown bag. The Officers took up a
collection for the dummy....I think it had about $800 or
so....

I just chalked up the whole experience of 30 days to
"well this is the way the real Army works". What at
trip!

Kaiser and ADC for 7th. Inf.Div. Camp Casey.
Colonel Moody was actual base commander ( he was a Tanker) I
remember the day Kennedy was killed we went on full alert, a
small plane from the north crossed over and dropped flyers
saying they did it and tonight they would be coming to get
us. The General was mad wanted to fight! My jeep had a siren
and red lights, he believed strongly in being prepared and
would call alerts by us driving thru the streets of Kaiser
with Siren and lights on. Lt. Jack Oliver was his Aide de
Camp and helicopter pilot. After him it was a Lt. Swain. We
used to check out shot guns from social services and hunt
pheasant in the hills for special dinners. Saw snow for the
first time in my life there as I was born in Miami, Fl. had
never been away from home.

- don't exist any longer - personal records destroyed in
home flood in 1969. Just remember that I used to wear the
yellow scarf & yellow rope on dress uniform. We had one
M41 tank in unit (left over from Korean war) - always on
dead line waiting for parts. Wasn't aware that agent Orange
was being used there. Only heard about it from Vietnam.
Went to Ft. Carson for a year after Korea. Would like to

Sent to Camp Kaiser in February, 1968, from Fort Ord, Ca.
after the seizure of the Pueblo. Was in B Company, 2-17th
Infantry. Did a lot of field training in the early part of
the tour due to the elevated hostility. My Unit was sent
out to work with the Engineers on the new bunker line and
also to Anyang for perimeter guard duty around an
underground ammo site. MP's had the inside guard duty and
we(Infantry) were not allowed to look out when helicopters
brought in cargo. No cameras allowed either. If there
were nuclear weapons in S. Korea at that time, I know where
they were. There is an Anyang that is now the 15th largest
city in S.K., but I don't know if it is the same one as the
little village outside this site. I never knew where we
were in relationship to Kaiser. I stayed 15 1/2 months to
get an early out. Almost had to stay when N. Korea shot
down the AWACS plane.
It's hard to imagine what Unchon ni is today. Have
considered going to SK, but I don't know if I could avoid
looking for what doesn't exist anymore long enough to enjoy
what it is now.

I am looking for any Army Buddies who served in South Korea
from January 30, 1967 through March, 1968 and was stationed
many times at the DMZ. I was suppose to leave Korea on
February 29, 1968 but because of the U.S. Pueblo Vessel
being captured by the North Koreans, I was extended thirty
(30) days. I can remember the many times at the DMZ when
the it was so cold and the river frozen that it was sub zero
degree temperatures which was awful. I have illnesses from
which I believe to be because of the spraying of Agent
Orange, chemicals and/or other defoliants that were sprayed
in the Spring and Summer of 1967 and would appreciate
hearing from anybody who served in Co. B 1st Bn. 17th (MECH)
Infantry during January, 1967 through March, 1968 who was
there and can provide a Buddy Statement and any other
information as I have already been denied two time and have
a BVA Hearing this month but, it has caused me so much pain
and depression to keep through this process as they just
keep using the magic date of April 1, 1968. The illnesses I
suffer from are Diabetes II, Peripheral Neuropathy in both
hands and feet and Prostate Cancer for which I have already
had three surgeries and my wife was even told by a manager
at the VA that I was treated for a prostate problem in March
of 1968 but still being denied. I know there are many of
you who are going through the same thing I am and I will be
glad to furnish you any information that might help you and
would love for you to do the same for me. I am at the pint
of giving up and I know that is what they want me to do but
you get so depressed and already suffer pain on a daily
basis but what are you suppose to care when nobody cares. I
do care and hope to hear back from any of you who do have
information that might be helpful as I dread the Hearing
because you don't have a chance in the world because you
cannot give all of the information you have and then in the
Statement of Case, it is not even correct so what is a
Veteran suppose to do?

Thank You for letting me share and hope to hear from someone
shortly. Again, I am here to furnish any information I have
that might help anyone. I remember our motto as being TRUTH
