Looking for anyone from the 516th Lt. Equip. Maintenance Company, 8th Army, who
served in Korea in 1968 - 1969. My husband, Jim Hecht, MOS 35L20, passed away
from lung cancer in 2022. His first AO presumptive disease, ischemic heart
disease, was diagnosed and treated in 2003.

Ever since then, I've been trying to find out if his duties ever took him to the
DMZ to repair helicopter communications equipment. I've heard that it was not
uncommon for technicians to go to the DMZ to make repairs in the field. His
primary location was ASCOM.

Here are the guys who served with him in 1968 with the same MOS:

This past March I was diagnosed with bladder cancer. I was stationed on the DMZ
with B Company 76th Engineer Battalion from December of 1965 to December of 1966.
VA denied my claim due to their presumptive date begins in Sept. of 1967. Any Vets
out there before Sept. of 1967 with cancer? I hope they re-evaluate the dates for
presumptive conditions.

Hi there,
I was wondering if you had found any proof of Agent Orange prior to September
67? My dad, John Plummer, was on the DMZ from February 1966-April 1967. C
Battery/5th Battalion/38th Artillery. I believe he was at camp Summerall, but
he has a hard time remembering. I have a picture of him "guarding the gate".
He has had colon cancer, bladder cancer, Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, as well as
other health issues. Thank you for your service!

My husband was stationed at Ascom City from March 1964 to June 1965. Also
benzene used to heat the barracks. He used to remark that in spite of lots of
rain nothing grew! Barren! He has been treated for cll a type of leukemia.
This is a blood cancer with no cure. Agent orange as well as other rainbow
herbicides were used and/or stored in Korea since the late 50s. Any info would
be appreciated. We want it documented that he was in Korea during the Vietnam
war and has developed leukemia. We have started to work with the VA.

I was stationed at Headquarters, Headquarters Battery, 7thBn 2nd Arty. 38th
Missile Artillery Brigade that consisted of 4 firing batteries in and around
the Seoul area, from Dec of 1970 to Jan of 1972. I am convinced that agent
orange was used on a regular basis to spray the vegetation in the concertina
wire around these batteries. It was always brownish rust color. It was done
with back pack sprayers by KATUSA site guards. I believe that was probably
the case with all Missile sites at that time in Korea including those south of
the DMZ area. The US dept. of defense will not acknowledge the exposure of
possibly another thousand or so personnel that worked at these sites.

Served at Casey between 19883-84. Spent time in the field
digging fox holes in bivouac area's where we were required to

field overlooking the "attack" position was dried - nothing
was growing except weeds. Any one that has been to Korea knows
that every bit of land is taken for food production - rice or
other vegetable's. I have developed a bleeding disorder My
doctors say this may be from agent orange. Has anyone had any
luck with the VA with this incident. They have a cut off date.

before getting cancer he had diabetes and years of multiple
kidney stones. my mother was denied compensation for agent
orange because his military records did not show him being
in the right location. however we submitted on deployment
order of my fathers that said 'secret' and when my mother
received the paperwork back it was gone. we were told to try
and find similar cases to back up our request. if anyone has
any suggestions on what to do from this point it would be

I was there until Jun when I ETS'D. I did patrols on both sides of the fence as well as guard duty in the fox holes along the zone.I remember seeing the oily look on every thing that was supposed to be vegatation. I am enrolled in the AO program and filed a claim for excessive itching of the skin and rashes if left untreated by appliing lotions but was denied as I didn't have any symptoms at the time I was sent to a specialist for an exam. If any one can help me with a claim or may have served with me on the DMZ at that time it would be nice to hear from you. VA Publishes Final Regulation to Aid Veterans Exposed

to Agent Orange in Korea

Will Provide Easier Path to Health Care and Benefits

WASHINGTON Veterans exposed to herbicides while serving along the demilitarized zone (DMZ) in Korea will have an easier path to access quality health care and benefits under a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) final regulation that will expand the dates when illnesses caused by herbicide exposure can be presumed to be related to Agent Orange.

VAs primary mission is to be an advocate for Veterans, said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki With this new regulation VA has cleared a path for more Veterans who served in the demilitarized zone in Korea to receive access to our quality health care and disability benefits for exposure to Agent Orange.

Under the final regulation published today in the Federal Register, VA will presume herbicide exposure for any Veteran who served between April 1, 1968, and Aug. 31, 1971, in a unit determined by VA and the Department of Defense (DoD) to have operated in an area in or near the Korean DMZ in which herbicides were applied.

Previously, VA recognized that Agent Orange exposure could only be conceded to Veterans who served in certain units along the Korean DMZ between April 1968 and July 1969.

In practical terms, eligible Veterans who have specific illnesses VA presumes to be associated with herbicide exposure do not have to prove an association between their illness and their military service. This presumption simplifies and speeds up the application process for benefits and ensures that Veterans receive the benefits they deserve.

Click on these links to learn about Veterans' diseases associated with Agent Orange exposure at http://www.publichealth.va.gov/exposures/agentorange/diseases.asp and birth defects in children of Vietnam-era Veterans at http://www.publichealth.va.gov/exposures/agentorange/birth_defects.asp.

VA encourages Veterans with covered service in Korea who have medical conditions that may be related to Agent Orange to submit their applications for access to VA health care and compensation as soon as possible so the agency can begin processing their claims.

Individuals can go to website http://www.vba.va.gov/bln/21/AO/claimherbicide.htm to get a more complete understanding of how to file a claim for presumptive conditions related to herbicide exposure, as well as what evidence is needed by VA to make a decision about disability compensation or survivors benefits.

Additional information about Agent Orange and VAs services for Veterans exposed to the chemical is available at www.publichealth.va.gov/exposures/agentorange.

The regulation is available on the Office of the Federal Register website at http://www.ofr.gov/.

If you worked at any of the 2d Inf Div. Guard Posts or Out Posts, or along the fence in the Guard Towers, or went on patrols into the Zone from the Fence, you were in areas directly sprayed with AO.

Please let me know where you were and what you did. Also, if you had contact with any Engineer Units or personnel in those areas, you can help us. Also - go to this site and read all of this document - it is long, but factual and worth the read - it was published before DOD and DOA confirmed use of AO in Korea and outlines where, who and when AO was used. http://cgsc.leavenworth.army.mil/carl/resources/csi/Bolger/bolger.asp .

Copy and paste that and read it ALL. It may be the best piece of evidence for those with AO related issues. What health issues are you facing? What has VA said, if anything about your conditions?

Please reply so I know more about you. I am working with 9 other guys from my Battalion - 2 of whom were in my Company - all of us are fighting with VA on AO caused health issues. Maybe we can help each other.

Take care - and write back soon.

I am retired USAF 1956-76. I served April 1969-May 1970 as the NCOIC (A2/G2) within Contract Management, Finance, Intelligence/PSY OPS, Plans/Requirements/Measurements, War Reserve Materiels, and Clandestine Operations for the Commander of the 314 Air Division. Very few people regardless of the branch of service have served within my MOS and if they did it was mainly during WWII or the Cold War. Let's just say we did not interact with too many people being AT&L within A2/G2 unless our orders dictated it. Our clandestine nickname we are called 'greyhead's' at Langley and at the Pentagon.

I was in an isolated area as well as several areas at several bases on the pennisula some very close to the DMZ while 6314 Support Wing underneath the 314 Air Division. AFHRA has general histories on the 314 Air Division but no histories the 6314 support wing available for 1969-70. Notwithstanding, I can tell you we dealt with DET 4500, 1005 Special Investigations Group - OSI; (6314 support wing exercised special courtmartial status over AF personnel civilian or uniform attached to ROKAF, **6314 support wing worked for the O/L Director of Materiel- aka AFNSW-1 or AFTAC-1 aka Atomic Energy Commission with DAF elements**, O/L 6146 Air Force Advisory Group to ROKAF, **Elements of ROKAF-33rd Pararescue Group//111th fighter Squadron**; **DET, 6314 Munitions Maintenance**; 65th ordinance HAWK; 6044th USAF Dispensary, DET 2, 39th Air Division; Battery B, 6th Missile Battalion, 44th Artillery; DEt 10, 20th Weather Squadron; and the **6314 support wing chose USAF or Army Aviation Company to assist with our special mission unit** as directed by the Commander of the 314 Air Division for **US Ambassador to Korea** and to the all **UN Secy. General Office Operations in Korea(CINCUNC)**.

I have confirmation that used herbcides on the DMZ/Pennisula. **(The herbicides that were used was to kill mosquitos)** I was within an isolated areas at Osan and others bases I was required to operational guide to: Taegu, Kimpo, Pusan and Kunsan Air bases (active regular air force duty military, Executive Branch level (J1,J3) TDY's orders, and Civilian or Uniform DAF/Dept of the Army/Defense Contract Administration Agency section Special Missions Unit assignments)

Here is my question to my brothers and sisters that served during the 2nd Korea War (DMZ-post USS Pueblo incident) I would love to know which US army units within the 2nd and 7th artillery battalions we (6314 Support wing under the 314 air division) worked with? I just can't seem to find which US Army group we worked with. I have confirmation through my research (Defense Finance Accounting Service (special inquires secton) in Denver has been a big help finding 30 year old Executive Branch level TDY records)

I recently have enlisted the help of US Senator Maria Cantwell (WA-D) office and US Congressman Jay Inslee (D-Wa) help which has been a huge help to me. Both of their offices have been extremely help to me of late. I would like to thank them both.

Also we have been using the Disabled American Veterans as a service officer. They have done a decent job but you have to do more work than the your service officer in order to have a prayer let alone a change to be approved for Herbicidical, Agent Orange, Mustard Gas, Purple, or Ionizing Radiation contamination by the VA. I received my first rejection letter after 18 months of research. Notwithstanding, after I wrote a letter to the VA they have re-open my case because i have a great deal of new information and research that fo some reason did not get evaluated by the VA. There was a mail problem between the Disabled American Veterans and the VA. This is why you must be careful with the DAV, VFW, American Legion, service office and officers. Those who work for DAV, VFW, American Legion etc are great americans but they have too high of a work load and too little pay.

Then my skin broke out then I almost got a medical discharge. Since discharge there has been several other mysterious sicknesses that doctors have thought to be related to Agent Orange exposure.
Then the numbness in my hands and feet was an inconvinence, now I am on total disability for Idiopathic Peripheral Neuropathy, I also have diabetes with no family history.
I have filed a claim with the VA and have been denied because the government stated Agent Orange was only used in Korea in 1968 and 1969, the same period it was used in Vietnam, however veterans that served through 1975 in Vietnam are eligible for agent orange compensation for residual exposure. I have written to senators and asked why residual effects would be acknowledged in Vietnam but not Korea, but they will not answer the question. I received a full-blown physical exam and got on the agent orange list. However, the VA database did not recognize my service in Korea as making me eligible for agent orange screening. After about an hour of trying to get the computer system to recognize me, the VA rep finally just put me down as a Vietnam vet. The closest I came to Vietnam was Inchon. Hopefully they've updated their system.

I know the gov. said 1968/69, I belive they used it before that date. I have been told by others that they experimented with it before they used it in Nam. I was in Korea and the DMZ 1965/66, at that time you didn't see any green grass or trees, everything was dead. No new growth of plants at all, and being a dumb kid at the time I thought it was because of the war, boy was I stupid. I have had skin cancer, not the kind you get from too much sun. Now I am totaly disabled because of Peripheral Neuropathy the kind you get from agent orange. Is Uncle Sam telling us the truth, I have filed about 3 months ago and haven't heard nothing other than they are looking at it. Is there any other info that you may have to help out on this??

I was at Camp Casey from 1983-84. Did a lot of field problems. Received an AAM for one of them. Team Spirit. I now have a rash on my hands. Can AO be in the ground and on the in the area of where we were for that long, (after the 70's) ofcourse I don't know the position of where Team Spirit was as we were on the move a lot, and also, there were other field problems that i was involved in. I would like any help I could get with this, as I hav something that has developed. I haven't been to any doctors, but I need to do soemthing. I just find it hard to think that this stuff can disapate in 10 years if it is let alone undesterbed. thank you
