Looking for anyone from the 516th Lt. Equip. Maintenance Company, 8th Army, who
served in Korea in 1968 - 1969. My husband, Jim Hecht, MOS 35L20, passed away
from lung cancer in 2022. His first AO presumptive disease, ischemic heart
disease, was diagnosed and treated in 2003.

Ever since then, I've been trying to find out if his duties ever took him to the
DMZ to repair helicopter communications equipment. I've heard that it was not
uncommon for technicians to go to the DMZ to make repairs in the field. His
primary location was ASCOM.

Here are the guys who served with him in 1968 with the same MOS:

I am currently helping a family member with his VA claim for exposure to Agent
Orange while assigned to HHB 7th BN (Hawk) 5th Artillery in late 1967 at tac sites
along the DMZ. Site Golden 4 is one location he's mentioned and there are others.
He's suffering from one of the recognized illnesses associated with exposure.
Obviously, it was a long time ago and his memory and a few photos only can help so
much. Is there anyone else here who was there at a similar time/location who
would like to correspond with me to share information?

I am applying for Widow's benefits as my husband passed away in July 2003 from
Colon Cancer. He served in the Vietnam Era in Korea from 1966-1967. I believe
it was until April 21, 1967. He got Stage 3 Hodgkin's Disease in 1974 and also
Thymomia in 1976. He had two heart attacks in 1984 and ended up with Colon
Cancer in 1997. He served at the Headquarters of the 21st Direct Support Group
in Korea. He saw evidence of Agent Orange during the time he was in Korea. Our
son recently found a picture of my late husband walking near a truck carrying
barrels of what we feel is Agent Orange which I have in my possession. Before
my husband passed, he filed for benefits and was denied. After finding and
seeing the picture of the truck carrying the barrels, I am filing for Widow's
benefits and on his behalf since he was quite certain Agent Orange was being
used in Korea before September 1967!

if AO was used prior to May 1, 1968 in Korea as well as in Germany. I
believe it was as I was there and saw the effects. Being a grader man, while
not on the DMZ, I also grader all the dirt roads in and around 2nd and 7th

January. 1968 to March 1969. The VA acknowledged my area was sprayed with the
chemical “ Agent Orange” enough to qualify for VA healthcare, but not enough
to cause my Type 2 diabetes, ischemic heart condition that resulted a massive
heart attack and open heart surgery. The heart condition was caused by
diabetes and high blood pressure. I also have little memory of a 35+ year
period of 1974-2014. I do not remember exactly where I was. We were on a

Comments:

Served Nov. 66 to Nov. 67 7 miles from the DMZ, the area was very sparse and
partially defoliated. Where the Veterans get the April 1, 1968 date is
crazy. You could see for along ways as vegetation was only about a foot
high. I have been fighting alot of the diseases listed for AO.

The old ways of the Veterans Administration are a
changing. Thus, we now have an opportunity to amend the VA
Final Rule on Agent Orange in the Korean Demilitarized Zone
(DMZ) from the past Secretary designated benefits dates of
1 April '68 to 31 August '71 to the statutory window of
September 1, 1967 through August 31, 1971.
However, the only way to bring about positive change
is through our political system. If we fail to take up
activism we fail period. I'm tired of being sick and I'm
sure you are too.

I am looking for anyone that was in Korea when these herbicides were
sprayed. I served at Camp Casey in 1975-77 and I have a lot of problems that
are associated with the affects of exposure to agent orange. But because I
was there after 1971 I do not qualify, but we were never told that these
herbicides were used in these areas and I don't believe that they just go
away. I have been trying to find reports that talks about the long term
effects that they have on the environment. I spent a lot of time in the
villages eating the foods prepared and also doing other things that I will
not mention as most soldiers did. But if I had known of exposure I would
never had eaten or partake in the things we did while stationed there. If
someone knows of the affects please let me know. I have now been diagnosed
with renal cancer and castlemens disease.

My husband passed away Dec. 21, 2016 and I've been trying
for the widow's pension due to his illnesses that were
related to military herbicides. Heart attack at very early
age, unknown lung problems, diabetes 2, neuropathy of the
legs and feet. He was in Camp Casey where he witnessed
them spraying herbicides on the outer perimeter of the camp
and there was no foliage anywhere for quite a long
distance. The camp was also bare of foliage. Have
pictures of a desolate looking landscape. Been turned down
for the pension but I'm going to take it to Senator John
McCain. The evidence points to military using herbicides
as early as 1965 both in Viet Nam and Korea. My husband
was there from January, 1965 to January 1967. This is an
atrocity of the highest level. I'm facing living on the
streets due to income being cut less than half after
husband's death. Bombard Senator McCain with letters. I'm
also going to contact the news media, both papers and News

the cut off by 3 days (BS). I remembered the Rocks
spraying stuff in the fields that we patrolled and during
my 13 months I was in the field for a total of nine months
two or three weeks at a time. I don't know what they were

What we need to prove someone actually worked with the

their Soldiers were infected and when.

38 C.F.R. §3.307 Presumptive service connection for chronic,
tropical or prisoner-of-war related disease, or disease
associated with exposure to certain herbicide agents;
wartime and service on or after January 1, 1947

It is suggested that those filing claims or appeals say
something like: "While I was in Korea I was exposed to
tactical grade herbicides and pesticides and other toxic war
materials." Do NOT say you were exposed, specifically, to AO.

find no way of getting documentation that Co "C" (and parts
of Co "A") 76th Engineers were up there, even though we were
attacked and lost 4 dead and 28 wounded! How do we get the
proof that we were there and actually digging up the DMZ at
the time? Has anyone already actually obtained the proof? Is
there anyone taking point on this that we can contact? Any
information will be appreciated. Thanks

of the MSA being hand sprayed with something to kill the

It was done by the KATUSA's so we never saw the containers
it came in.

I was a Sergeant Missile Crewman. We had 5 war heads in
the bunker inside the MSA. I'm pretty sure they were not
spraying with roundup herbicide.

My guess the military will never admit to using agent
orange, At that time nobody really knew the ill effects of
the stuff, so nobody cared.

An active count of veterans who served in the Republic
of Korea from September 1, 1967 through March 31, 1968 and
after August 31, 1971 who have Agent Orange symptoms should
be mandated by Congress.
We can accomplish this by positive action on our
part. And, we owe it to our families.

Important Info. Please read
The Veteran was assigned to
the 30th Ordinance between January 1968 and April 1968. From
April 1968 to January 1969, the Veteran was assigned to the
7th Battalion (Hawk), 5th Artillery Division. His MOS
(military occupational specialty) was radar repairman on the
Hawk Missile System. The 1968 history submitted by
the 38th Artillery Brigade showed that the 7th Battalion,
5th
Artillery was still at those sites (with the headquarters
element at Camp Page in South Korea, which was 6.2 miles
from
the DMZ). Further, JSRRC noted that military records showed
that herbicides were used in Korea between 1967 and 1969
along the southern boundary of the DMZ and that Agent Orange
was used from April to August 1968. Entitlement to service
connection for peripheral neuropathy,
claimed as due to herbicide exposure, is allowed.

Agent Orange applied with hand sprayers by South Korean
laborers on the hills around our compound at Camp Wentzel
in 1967. I smelled it day and night. And the vegetation
died. This all occurred right after NKA's attacked 2/23
inf in July of 1967, blowing arms room off its concrete
floor. 2nd Bn Engineers had already been having it applied
in DMZ to kill vegetation when building the new fence along
MDL. It was also used in the rice paddies to keep
vegetation dead to eliminate cover for NKA infiltrators and
assault teams. These were not happy times. That crap was
used everywhere I went. It was a really sickening smell.
My friend from Co. B 1/38th inf. 3rd Brigade, 2ID, waded
thru it on patrol and it penetrated his fatigues and stayed
on his clothes all night in the field, and on his boots
even after returning to base camp. No new boots were
issued as a result of the contaminations. Army never gave
any consideration to the men that served in the Zone
walking and living in that crap. Well I am here to tell
you it was 1967 when use of it began. Just because the
idiots of the command are unable to document it is not
surprising, when one looks at the way the way the Army was
run then from the bottom to the top. Not much in the way
of records is kept for anything. I read Bolingers book and
he is upside down and backwards in his reporting. He
missed so much because he knew so little. Most of what
happened in the zone stayed in the zone. I think that is
where Las Vegas got the slogan. I did read a few articles
in the Stars and Stripes at the Rec Centers a few times
after contact incidents occurred, but most of it never made
the paper. It was all suppressed. Record keeping was so
bad that at one time I went to the fuel depot to get gas
for my jeep and the barrel was labeled wrong. I ended up
with diesel fuel in my 4 cyl jeep fuel tank. It worked but
it ran like crap. Had to drain gas tank and refilled with
gas. Lucky it ran afterwards. I believe there are enough
blogs on the 2ida.org site and the imjin.com site to prove
that Agent Orange use was not a fallacy in 1967 Korea DMZ.
