I was assigned to JSA (Joint Security Area) Panmunjom in
June of 1976 at the ripe old age of 17, just right out of
basic and Infantry training. After two weeks of being
assigned there I was voted out by my fellow soldiers to be
reassigned and sent south to the 2nd Infantry Division. The
reason - I was too young to be in such a dangerous place.
My new duty assignment was with Charlie company, 2/9
Infantry, 2nd ID, which was just a few miles down the road
and still in the DMZ. How lucky was I! Two months later,
on August 18, Captain Bonifas (company CDR) and Lieutenant
Barrett (platoon LDR I do believe) of JSA were brutally
murdered by North Koreans at Panmunjom. The next three to
six months were pure hell. I would rather not go in to it.

I survived this hellish tour and was then stationed at Ft.
Polk, Louisiana for a year. Another rat hole. Guess what? I
was sent back to Korea for another tour of duty. Guess
where? Yep, the DMZ again. This time I was two years older
and I served 9 of my 12 month tour at JSA, Panmunjom; face
to face with the enemy. Yes, I was accepted this time,
although, I was relieved of duty three months before my end
of tour for being caught by the company commander for
saying something to a North Korean soldier who was in my
face in conference row. I was again sent south to the 2nd
ID, but 30 miles south of the DMZ.

I can't say on this writing what I said to the KPA guard
which got me relieved. These were the same guys who were
part of the murders two years before. It was not a good
environment to be in.

My second tour was just as eventful as the first. A North
Korean tunnel was discovered not far from our base camp and
it reached almost to the capital of Seoul, South Korea. The
team that went in to investigate got blown up. Several
Americans were killed, from what I recall. I can't count
the number of live patrols I participated in my two tours.
I can say I have been there and done that! In front of
them all! Keep up the fire! 8th Army and 2nd ID.

In August 1976 North Korean guards in Pamunjon attacks a tree
trimming detail and kills two . We went on alert the alert
canon fired 5 times that day (4 ment we were going to war )
Three days of not knowing if the next sound would be your last
. Sleep deprivation fear of not knowing what was going to
happen . Childs intoxicated waving a loaded M 16 around
calling Top to send Him home . The tree was cut down we were
presented with certificates thatsaid a tree became a symbol of
oppression.A group of free men rose up and cut it down . After
that the rest of the tour was filled with physiological
warfare, alerts prompted by troop movements by the north ,
especially during the holidays, The heat duct read MERRY Fin X
MASS , when i frist saw this i was like that is a bad
attitude. Then that Christmas i was righton man while in full
gear ready for patrols,outside temperature-30 . 2/17 Camp

Was just denied PTSD even though the VA in Long Beach CA
recently diagnosed me with PTSD. The denial letter said I
applied past the 2 yr deadline???? Since when is there a 2
yr deadline for PTSD sufferers? Pretty pissed off. I may
file an appeal. I have a year. I was shot at on GP
Ouellette in 88 and got caught in a minefield in 89.
Accidently blew up a south Korean boy while at PLDC, blew
his hands off and blinded him. Big stressor was watching
the 2nd Hunger games movie and one of the characters in the
games had one hand gone. Freaked me out. Nightmares etc.
Nobody cares. Not Nam or SW Asia or no CIB you get nothing.
C Co 1/5 Infantry 88-90.

I am 100% service connected for PTSD. My PTSD is for my experience in
a mine field and two squad members, one injured and one killed by a land
mine. Also for my life being saved over another situation. I had novht
mares and flash backs. The loud speakers at night and the extreme cold.
The sight of North Korean human remains and the artillery missions firing
over our camp. The explosions. I also was a gunner on the Huey covering
the medievac evacuating the wounded who got shot (North Koreans). And
so the fear of dying and not making it home to see my loved ones. So yes
you can have PTSD from serving on the D. We called it the D. Not the Z. I
ended up suicidal when I got state side.

Keep up the fire. Your PTSD is real. People don't know what we went through back then. No war on the DMZ? What about my West Point classmate, Bert Misusawa, who was awarded the Silver Star for the Panmunjon incident in Nov 1984? And all the rest of us on the 2ID net in foxholes that cold night? Anyone that needs a statement of support, give me details. LTC John W. Powell (1984-5, Cdr TAB, 25th FA, 2ID)

I'm glad to find people who know there is still a war in
Korea. Stationed at Camp Pelham 1986. Went back to visit
once. A lot has changed, but I still felt spooked. The
camp name had changed to Camp Gary Owen and was a CAV
unit. I was there as part of the 2/17th FA. I hope you
can prove/be compensated for your PTSD thru the VA.
As for me, I've had to do a "Tom Number" - Suck it up and
Drive On. Took almost 20 years just to accept things -
now I do not want to forget - I want to remember that
these things DO happen - I don't want to be so surprised
and shocked ever again. The South Korean people are
beautiful and friendly. The enemy in the North has been
waging war for a long time.
