The orange scarf was the color worn by signal troops. Was
in Korea 1957-58, we wore orange, inf wore blue, arty wore
red, etc. Don't remember having to buy them but they were
standard uniform, year around, no ties.

Our Detachment-NCOIC had us wear our 'Orange-Scarf', with
white-laced spit-shined boots on monthly pay-day parade. With
the Air-Force when I was @ AIT, Sheppard AFB. (1971).
Other than that, we wore the Artillery 'Red-Scarf' for yearly
Battery-photos shoots only. With the HHB & B-Btry, 1/41 FA,
56th Field Artillery Command (Pershing). Schwabisch Gmund,
Germany. (1984-1986).

I served in Korea 1957-1958 with the 304th Sig. Bn., Radio
Company.
I don't remember the date we started wearing the orange
scarf's, but I remember when we were told to start. It was
payday and we got in line and as we passed thru, saluted and
requested our pay, we got into another line and a civilian
was selling orange scarves and everyone was instructed to
buy two. We wore them everyday from then on. It was
rumored that the general's wife thought we would all look
good wearing our colors.

The scarf of the branch (blue for Inf.- yellow for Armor Etc. was established after WW2 to distinguish your branch .
The old overseas cap had piping to do the same thing.
If you were a combat leader the bright green loop over the shoulder strap could also be worn to signify your status as a combat leader. These are only a few changes that have been made. When I enlisted (1942) there were only 7 enlisted ranks, No# 7 was a Private. There were three grades that wore a T, (signifying Technician), on
the chevron, T-3, T-4, and T-5.Grade 2 had 2 rockers and
was the highest grade of Technician. The CO checked your
uniform and appearance before you received a pass, also
you recited your general orders if you were a rookie.
AAH the good old days.

I was a member of the 141st Signal Bat. 1st Armored Div. at Ft. Hood Texas during early part of Vietnam war (1966-1967). We wore the orange scarf a few times, but it was very tightly controlled. I recall some rumors about the unit not being authorized to wear it but on only a few occasions. It is however a Signal Unit color.

Comments:

Signal Corps colors are orange (primary) and white
(secondary). An orange scarf was (I'm not sure it happens
in today's army) worn with fatigues, khakis, or
(occasionally) with class a's on ceremonial or other
occasions as directed by the local commanding officer.
Thus, signal units would wear an orange scarf on parade,
for example. I remember back in the early seventies some
training units would require cadre and students to wear
their branch color scarf when on non-training duty. Other
branches and their colors include infantry (light blue and
white), artillery (red and gold), armor/cavalry (yellow
and green), engineers (red and white), ordnance (scarlet
and gold), quartermaster (buff and gold), and medical
(burgandy (a dark purple-red) and white). You can check
with the Army's Institute of Heraldry for more

Was in Pusan,Hialeah Compound, 60-61 EUSA Signal Long Lines Bn. and we wore it. At that time we wore the EUSA patch and before I left the patch was changed to the 7th Logistical Command. It looked like two arrows chasing themselves in a circle.

The 304th Signal Bat. at Camp Coiner wore the orange scarf as part of their uniform (Dress Fatigues) it was
called. THe Battilion crest was either pinned on or sewed
on to the scarf.
I hope this little bit of info is what you were looking for.
