Recently (8-2020) I have been in contact with Rich Scholz who was a Lt. In A
Btry from l955 to l956. (Neckarsulm) He was in charge of one gun section. SFC
Grady Henderson was section chief . He lives in SF and we have had several e-
mails. He remembers SFC Chester Ball and others (not me apparently). Rich
recalls the difficulty in the taking the gun through the little towns. Nice
to read his e-mails.

Was assigned to HHC, 867th FA Bn (280mm Gun) in Feb 1957.
Later relocated to Merrill Barracks, Nurnberg; redesignated
2nd Bn, 39th Arty. Was assigned as the medic attached to B
Battery, independently located in Dachau (near Munich),
commanded by Cpt Small & 1SG Long. Would love to hear from
others assigned to this unit between 1957-1960.

I was assigned to A btry in August 1953 at Ft Sill from basic training.
We were told that we were going to pack up and move as a unit to
Germany. I was assigned to the survey section under M/Sgt John Geany.

Went to Germany by transport ship in November. First located at a old
school site called Kirscheimbolanden. Stayed there until late 1954. And
we all moved to Neckarsulm near Stugartt.

M/Sgt. Eugene Lowry was 1st Sgt. Nickname was "Bull" . Major Butler
was CO when I left in January 1956.

I had a good time as I remember . Good food, beer, companionship on and
off the Kaserne. I bought a 1947 VW from a departing GI and drove it all
over Europe and saw a lot of territory.

Went home to iowa in January 1956. I have since connected with Ed
Boone, Darral Stogsdill, Chester Ball (he was section chief at the firing of
the atomic test in early 1953) and Don Mills.

Interesting to know now that these guns were a "BFD" in this time period.
Russians were menacing the border in Germany and these guns were a
big hindrance to their plans. As I remember our tank numbers ere about
1500 and the Russians had 6000 lined up on the border.

Would like to hear from others that were there at this time period.

I am looking for any members of the Bn. that servered from 1953 when unit was activated at Ft. Sill, OK until last part of 1955 in Germany. Especialy members of A Btry who were at Desset Rock NV for the Atomic Shot Gable in Operation Knowhole-Upshot.
