I'm looking for some information for my Dad who served in the Oklahoma National
Guard, 45th division, 179th regiment, Company J.
My dad would like to find contacts for a few of the men he served with that didn't
make it home from battles at Old Baldy. He remembers first names or nicknames. Is
there a list of men from this company or can someone help us find someone
knowledgeable we could talk to?
Thank you to all of the brave men and women who have served our country.

Comments:

I know very little regarding my grandfather's service, as he passed away when I
was a teenager. I am trying to retrieve his records, but anyone who has tried
this knows how difficult it can be - especially after the 1973 fire.

My grandfather was William Willinsky
He enlisted in Altoona, PA in 1949
He was discharged from Indiantown Gap Military Reservation, PA in 1952
His DD214 lists: Btry B 63rd AAA Gun Bn Germany.
I found a patch that seems to be the 3rd armored division (Korea)
He also had an identification card issued from Fort Bliss

I know it's a long shot, but I am trying to find any kind of information
available.

C. W. Wright, Jr. Service number RA-14340079, served in L Company, 3rd
Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment (Inf Regt,) 2nd Infantry Division (Inf Div).
He was reported missing in action (MIA) on 2 June 1951, Wontong-ri, South Korea.
While missing, C.W. Wright was promoted to Corporal, effective 1 May 1953.

Lacking any information of his continued survival, the U.S. Army issued a
presumptive finding of death on 31 December 1953.

His name does not appear on the Johnnie Johnson List, or the Missing in Action,
Captivity report compiled from returning prisoners of war (POWs).

Anyone with information regarding my uncle please contact me.

Kind thanks,

C. Wright

I'm researching my dad's military duty in Korea. Conrad Praski, 179th infantry
division. Dad died in 2000 from lung cancer, so I can't ask him questions.
However, I'm happy to chat with any of his buddies and let them know about his
life after Korea.

Dad didn't talk much about his time in Korea. I know from research that the
179th was an Oklahoman national guard unit. Was it common for drafted men to
end up in a national guard unit?

the Korean War. I am not sure of the specific details of his
unit or dates he was there. He used to tell me stories about
his time served. His best friend was shot and killed while
laying next to him in a bunker. He told me he was shot in
the leg and had shrapnel in different areas of his body. He
passed away in April 2007. I am looking for any information
pertaining to his time in the Army. I have looked on several
websites without any luck. Can anyone point me in the right

I am a WWII veteran that stayed in and went to Korea in July,1950 arriving at Pusan on 8th of August,1950 with the 73rd Heavy Tank Bn.. The 6th and 70th Tank Bn's shipped at the same time as we did.We had obsolete tanks and most of our NCO's were WWII vets so they were experienced in combat operations. The troops that i saw ,the ones that were there before us,were really worn out and suffering from fatigue, however the fighting spirit was still in most of them. Our orders were simple,
'Hold the line or swim. It's a long swim to Japan and there are no boats available.' That gave us very little choice.I really think the arrival of Tank units was the key to victory and eventual landing at Inchon. We held the line!

And LEAVE NO ONE BEHIND, a story about Korea

I have read and subscribed to many magazines for many years, but for some reason I have never read a story about the forgotten war KOREA.
And
I am one of the lucky ones that survived the Korean War, but I am also one of the ones who has post traumatic stress. I was in Japan when the Korean War broke out, and at the time we were taking amphibious maneuvers. We just stayed on the landing craft’s, and sailed off for Korea. The story below is just one of many I dream about, and think about all the time. Though it may be hard to prove except for one individual who was in my forward observer party, I doubt if there are many people alive from that time. I have seen an awful lot of stories about Iraq, and other popular wars, about saving American lives. I think it may be about time to let the public known a couple good things about Korea.

I was with the 61st field artillery battalion Of the First Cavalry Division. In Japan I was the artillery mechanic, but in Korea we had a forward observer party wiped out. I was assigned as jeep driver radio operator to replace my friends that were killed. That is how I ended up to being on the front lines for 300 straight days and nights. The artillery does not go into reserves as the Army does.

My name is Richard Jacobi
2493 Youngstown Wilson Road
Ransomville NY 14131
Phone number 716 791-4294

Thank you very much Richard Jacobi

It was early December 1950, and we were in full retreat from the Yalu
River. My jeep was the last of three Jeeps in the column, and there was nothing between China and us. Most of the Chinese had already gotten through our lines at the Yalu River, and we were fighting roadblocks every mile or so.

After days of this we came to a very large River. They had bulldozed a road through the River in that almost kept us out of the water which was ice cold as the temperatures were near zero or below. When we were about a mile from the River the convoy bogged down to a standstill. Shortly thereafter a liaison plane circled over us and dropped a message. It said there were American troops on foot on the other side of the River with no weapons. The company commander told his driver, the mortar driver forward observer and myself the artillery forward observer driver to unload our jeeps, and trailers, and see what we could do to help them.
We headed cross-country towards the River and came across a raft that was about 15 ft. by 15 ft. in size. It was frozen to the shore, and we started using our rifle butts to free it from the ice. While the other guys busted ice I went up the shore about 100 yards to a house, and found 10-ft. long Poles. By the time I got back they had the raft free from the ice and we started to poll across the river. That was when we first noticed that the 300 Foothill on the other shore was covered with Chinese. We could see the dark blue uniform of the officer and his gold insignias, as that's how close we were to them. We got to the other shore and the GIs jumped aboard and hugged us and one guy tried to give me his wallet. The hill looked like Custards last stand with all the Chinese lined up on it. The trip back was hell waiting for the mortar's that never came to wipe us out. I can just imagine how those troops felt waiting that 20 minutes it took us to get the raft their. They were a brave bunch of soldiers. We got back to the other side and loaded up our jeeps and trailers with the men and returned back to the company. I have never seen or heard from anyone of the group from that moment on, and never got as much as a thank you or nice job from anyone about the troops we brought across. I am sure the company commander got himself a nice recommendations and medal out of it.

Hello to all. I'm a feelancer writer working on an assignment for the AARP website www.aarp.org. Mr. Halberstam is currently writing a book about what happened when the Chinese entered the Korean War. I have been asked to solicit comments, thoughts, memories, opinions, etc. about the war from the veterans who served. These comments will appear in aarp.org's Korean War bulletin board (http://www.aarp.org/veterans/) - in conjunction with the publishing of Mr. Halberatsm's story - and hopefully spur further debate at a time when the Korean Peninsula is once again in the news.
