I have just reviewed The Chosin Few site; East of Chosin Part 2, by Patrick Roe, he, a marine captain at Chosin. I am especially amused by his remarks on page 6, and his solution to our problem of survival in the evacuation of our wounded. His suggestions to our problems on the night of 1 December 1950. That our forces around Hill 1221 should have been surrendered to the CCF at that point in time. As one survivor; I disagree. For these reasons;
Wounded men are to be considered non-combatants, the same as prisoners of war. The CCF had no facilities to care for their own wounded let alone ours. The CCF tossing grenades into the trucks of our wounded did not establish a rational jester after those trucks were stopped. Indeed Roe, highlights within his same paragraph about TF Drysdale: chose to surrender on the agreement of the Chinese that they would take care of the wounded. The Chinese reneged on their agreement, but some of the lesser wounded did manage to escape. What is his point? Recall the problem here was Marine General Smith, which had no control over Army B/31, but assumed he did-though he denied them the PUC Award on the grounds; they attached themselves -ordered this force-in opposition to Colonel Drysdale's decision; to continue at all cost which did not leave open an opition for surrender.
Our problem east of the reservoir was one of ammo, not resolve. It is stated Smith granted us air priority on the 1st, that is not factual,if we had that priority we had all the privileges that went with it as well. What happened? Ammo that would have and should have been dropped on the 1st before we pulled out was diverted to the west side for Yudam-ni. The air cover ended at dusk, while night fighters-hecklers-would defend Fox Hill, which had artillery support from Hagaru, this same night. The old maxim that One must sacrifice the few to save the many at times was corrupted here. Fox Hill also received ammo drops this day. What is the Marine Corps total phantom obsession with the survivors of Task Force MacLean-Faith? Could it be some underlying guilt that has yet to surface? Only time will unravel that mystery!

I am searching for information on my first cousin Eldred
Beek, who was with Headquarters Co., 1st Battalion, 32nd
Infantry. The Army reported him killed on December 1, 1950 east of Chosin Reservoir. The information in a letter which the family received from the Army after
they had requested additional information regarding his
being killed in action was very sketchy. They stated that
the only person that witnessed Eldred's death was Sargent
First Class Teddy A. Cojedo, RA 10301984, of Headquarters
Co., 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry. We are seaching for
this individual or information about him.

For I&R info see, Appleman page 99, lists Intel. Sgt. as Ivan H. Long, page 103-his photo as Lt.Col. Refer, other pages,40, 236-37-270-71 & 283-84. Archive reports; declassified 2/1/80- documents, state all records have been lost due to retrograde movement. Opn Rpt. No 1, 4 Dec. '50-declassified 7/13/91, list location of 7th Div scattered from Hamhung to Chosin, Item # 1. Combat efficiency: 25%. (Official S-2 copy.) Of special note, Marine Recon company was to be at Yudam-ni, but 'delayed' by lack of anti-freeze and tire chains at Koto-ri, assigned to rear guard there. Col. Drysdale was also to have been forward at Yudam-ni as well with them, also 'delayed' EBB & FLOW/GPO, Mossman, 1990.

Above message, I Can not get all information on a home web page! I have some explosive information on the Cause & Effect of our entrapment at Chosin, why we were rushed into that area. Appleman's East of Chosin strongly suggests we were to merely be a blocking mission there. That Almond did not want to extend our mission to far north, Archive 'declassified' orders dispute this. We were set to seize the 'Town of Changjin' and advance to the Yalu River. I have written a book on this (yet to be published.) I have condensed six pages to distribute that gives the army some ammo against the nearly fifty years of army bashing our forces suffered east of Chosin. Why was this such a mixed force-the 31st&32nd? I have my version supported by some late government sources.
