I was stationed at the KMAG Detachment at Inje and was the 2nd Lieutenant Army Pilot that had the L-19 Bird Dog aircraft on the Airfield (ALFA-6 I believe) across the little river. I lived in one of the quonset huts on the compound. There was an NCO mechanic with a jeep and we shared the airfield with a Korean flight unit that supported the Korean Corps Commander with about six L-19s. This detachment, close to the East coast, just south of the DMZ was over 12 hours jeep drive on dirt roads full of pot holes, over mountain passes to Seoul, or, 50 minutes flight in my L-19. I was lowest ranking officer on the compound, became the commissary and financial officer which made me fly once each month to Kimpo to pick up the payroll and steaks and other food items for the messhall. Flew the chaplain to several different camps each Sunday to provide church services to the troops. A KATUSA Lieutenant was assigned as interpreter and we became close buddies throughout my assignment. This was a short chapter in my life that had a lot of great discoveries, cultural learning and camaraderies.
