SP/4 Frederick A. Carroll
HHC, 3rd Bde, 2nd Inf. Div.
15 AUG 1978
Arrived in Korea approx. March-April, 1978
In august, he was in a military Olympic style competition
exercise with several US and Korean units; it was at this
exercise that the incident occurred, the river was already
overflowing the banks and moving very fast from the snow
melt and monsoon rains.
It was while crossing the river in a raft with several other
troops that the raft flipped over, the current quickly swept
them down river, all were rescued before reaching the
nearest bridge, except Fred and CPL Kim.
Fred was already gone, swept out to sea, no recovery possible.
Memorial services were at 1500-1600, 29 Aug, 1978 at Camp
Howze Chapel.

I and another personal friend of Freds, as well as others
attended this service.
I still have the brochure that was handed out for anyone
wanting to attend the service that day.
